Windows Vista SP1 Due in Q1 2008

The final version of the Microsoft’s Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will be released in the first quarter of next year, the software maker officially announced.

The Service Pack 1 for Vista will include updates strictly to fix bugs and enhance the performance, reliability, and application compatibility of the Microsoft’s latest operating system. Vista SP1 will not break any applications already running on the OS, according to David Zipkin, senior product manager for Microsoft.

Specifically, SP1 will fix performance features, such as allowing for the computer to resume functionality after being in the Hibernate or Standby state, and also reduce the time it takes between a user hitting CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys to get the log-in prompt so they can log on to Windows. The SP1 will also improve the performance of Internet Explorer 7 to speed Javascript processing and reduce CPU utilization so sites running AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML) can run faster, Zipkin said.

Regarding reliability, the Service Pack will fix the various crashes users have reported through Microsoft’s automatic reporting service.

Microsoft also announced the Beta release of the SP1 will be delivered next month to 10,000 - 15,000 testers.
