  3. I missed all the Balck Friday and Cyber Monday deals, and my laptop just got knocked off my desk over the weekend, and it’s toast. I’m going to wait a week or so and see if there are any after Christmas deals or open-box specials at Best buy.

  6. Hi Dan – I looked through the entire Lenovo black Friday catalog for 11/27 and other dates and cannot find the model below. They only have the Intel i5 version listed for $539.99. Can you help me out if this a misprint or not?

    • Actually I just found an old scan of the print ad – they changed it since then, it used to have the model you listed in #28 in the print ad, but now it is the regular model with i5, not AMD. Why would they change it?

  7. Hi Dan, I’m looking at the Lenovo Legion i5 15 (82AU00CXUS) as it has all the features I’m looking for and seems to be a great price on that sale ($599.99). However, Lenovo has a number of Black Friday deals already active today (11/21/20), but I can’t find any mention of a sale on that particular unit, and it is currently priced at $829.99. How do you know the price will drop on 11/27? I’m just worried about waiting for that to happen and missing other deals going on in the next week, and then if it never actually comes to pass. Thanks!

  8. Hi,

Hoping you can help- I’m looking to buy my sister a laptop on cyber monday. She listens to a lot of music on youtube, downloads files, watches videos, does her university homework on it. She had a Chromebook before but didn’t like it so not getting that again. What would you recommend for a laptop under $300 dollars for cybermonday? There are so many options and I’d like to narrow it down to about 3 different options.

    • Hi, for your criteria, currently the best option is the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15 81WE011UUS for $300 and if you can extend your budget to $450 or $500 here are two more good options from the list above:

      – Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5502 with Core i3
      – Lenovo ThinkPad L390 Yoga 2-in-1 (may require RAM upgrade to 8GB for smooth experience)

What all of them have in common is that they feature IPS wide viewing angles – important for picture quality – and they have fast solid state drives instead of hard drives that can slow things a lot. Basically, if you can find a laptop with an IPS screen, SSD, Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 or AMD Ryzen 3 / 5 / 7 processor and 8GB or more RAM, you can buy that and have an excellent machine for these tasks.

  9. Nice announcement but they are new products. I have found a website Memory4Less.com, also offer the best deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2020. Last year I purchased some hard-to-find laptop parts and accessories like CPUs, Storage Devices, Charges and, Adapters. I think need to visit to just check out the deals.

  10. Please be aware that Best Buy WILL NOT honor their ‘Price Match Guarantee’ for the week before Black Friday through December 2nd. I bought a Chromebook 3, 4G. by Samsung at Best Buy for $119 on their website with in-store pickup this week.

Yesterday I got the Walmart weekly circular for this week and they have the same Samsung Chromebook 3,4G for only $99, $20 cheaper than the Best Buy Chromebook. It was in stock so I bought it there, too. I contacted Best Buy before buying at Walmart but after buying at Best Buy. This is when I found out they will not price match. That fact is not disclosed on their website, nor was it advertised or given to me when I picked up and paid at the store on Monday (this past Monday, a few days ago). So, maybe a price difference of $20 isn’t earth shattering but the fact that store so heavily advertises their ‘price match guarantee’ and then says oh, no, not this time frame, sorry…. the Walmart deal is not a ‘doorbuster’ but you do have to buy it at the store, not online. That is the only difference in the 2 computers. I am so disgusted with Best Buy. I bought at Walmart and will return the Best Buy purchase. They could have kept me as a customer by honoring their advertising and matching a competitor’s price, but they didn’t so I won’t be a customer going forward.

    • Hi, take a look at these 3, because they have IPS wide viewing angle displays as a very important feature. All of them have USB-C ports and are priced at around $400. The HP model below has a 128GB SSD but it additionally has a 1-TB HDD, so the value is still great. All models have very similar performance, but the Lenovo laptops below come with larger 52 WHr batteries instead of 41 WHr and have backlit keyboards, so I would probably choose one of them.

        • Hi do you know the SKU of the Flex 5,? Or just check whether its screen is IPS wide viewing angle. If it is, that’s the better choice because the S340 isn’t listed with IPS. If you’re interested in other models, I would make sure to get a notebook with IPS screen, SSD storage, and at least 8GB RAM. For the tasks you mentioned, it isn’t overly important whether the processor is Core i3, i5, or i7.

    • Hi, do the configurations you’re interested in feature IPS technology for wide viewing angles and what storage device they use – HDD or faster SSD? My two personal minimal requirements are IPS and SSD storage, since they significantly improve user experience. There are a few models on the list above priced at around $400 with these features, but they don’t have DVD writers. DVD drives became quite rare in modern laptops, but you can always get an external USB DVD for around $20.

  12. Hi,
I’m a college student looking for a good long lasting budget laptop. Not looking to spend anything over $300. Which Laptop from the Black Friday deals would you recommend? I download a good amount of files and create folders. I like using multiple tabs when browsing and watch most of media on my laptop. Thanks.

    • Hi, for under $300 on the list there are a few laptops with large 8GB RAM and large storage space (1TB) to meet your multi-tasking and file storing requirements. These are the Lenovo ThinkPad E495 20NES0F100 and HP 17-by1061st, both with decently fast processors. Nevertheless, these are budget laptops without high-res Full HD screens and IPS tech for wide viewing angles. That’s the biggest compromise you have to make if you don’t want to exceed your $300 budget.

  13. What are your thoughts on Lenovo thinkpad t470? It is on sale for Black Friday at Lenovo for $499? I am looking for a mid range laptop for home use in the $350-500 range. I really don’t know what specs but someone at a electronics store recommended Lenovo or HP with SSD, minimum 4GB, 256 GB, i5,……I would love your recommendations for a laptop. Thank you!

    Reply
    • Hi, Lenovo’s Black Friday / Cyber Monday ads are not out yet. But if they offer the ThinkPad T470 with SSD, i5 CPU, and at least 4GB RAM for $500, I think that would be a very good deal. That’s because ThinkPad T-series laptop are much more sturdy than a typical budget notebook. The caveat here is that the T470 is an old model from 2-3 years ago and uses old 6th Gen Intel Core processors. There are the (pricier) T480 and T490 with newer and faster processors, but even a 6th Gen i5 is very good for the daily computing tasks, especially if paired with SSD and 8GB RAM (4GB can be usable too). Also, if display quality matters to you, make sure your laptop has at least Full HD resolution and IPS technology for wide viewing angles. However, Full HD IPS laptops with at least i5 and SSD aren’t very common in the $500 price range.

Not sure which one is better 1TB HDD vs 128 SSD? Please share your input?

    Thanks,

    • Hi! Yes, storage is the only big difference between the two laptops. Performance-wise, SSD storage is far more superior than HDD storage. Actions like system boot-up, loading large programs and files, and file copy / paste / move operations will be much faster on a laptop with an SSD than with HDD.

On the other hand, the 1TB HDD (around 1,000 GB) provides a much larger storage space over the 128 GB SSD. However, for many users who don’t store large files like videos and high-resolution pictures on laptops’ internal storage, 128GB can be enough. For an overview of laptop storage devices and how much storage space you need for your programs and files, you can read this post: https://laptoping.com/laptop-pc-storage-explained-hdd-ssd-hybrid-emmc.html

        • I don’t own them so can’t comment on build quality, battery life and such. But I would choose a laptop with an SSD over HDD anytime. The difference is big in day-to-day activities.

Another very important point for me are IPS wide viewing angles, but both HP and Lenovo have IPS screens, so my choice is HP because of the SSD.

  16. Good info. Wondering if I should go with the Dell I3567-5949BLK-PUS at Best Buy or HP 15-cc610ms at Microsoft. I’m going to basically use it for general browsing on internet and some MS office. Nothing too extravagant. Maybe watching videos on external HD. Didn’t know if the SDD would make up for the difference from the HP. Might have a few programs open at once. Thanks.

    Reply
      • Hi, I would get the HP 15-cc610ms, primarily because of its IPS wide viewing angle screen. The Dell uses a TN screen with narrow viewing angles, which can be quite troublesome for movie watching. Also, the HP has a faster 8th Gen i5 processor, instead of 7th Gen, but it is not a major advantage for the light tasks you mentioned. Plus, the HP has an IR camera for easy face recognition-based log-ins. That’s a nice perk.

Having SSD is really important performance-wise. But, in this case my choice would be the HP, because it’s much easier to do hard drive than screen upgrade. So, I would get the HP and upgrade its HDD to SSD (if not satisfied with HDD performance).

  17. Hi this is a great source of information! Thanks for putting it together. So like others I have a specific question based on our household needs. My 9 year old son would like to begin coding and making games, he took a coding summer camp and loved it. But I need a laptop for personal work, mainly office products, storing pics/videos, streaming, etc. I like the idea of a 2 in 1, I’m open to any brand, although I have always used Dell’s professionally. My max budget is $700. I would really appreciate your guidance and opinion. Thanks!

    • Hi, based on your description the best choice so far in my opinion is the HP Envy x360 15t 3EC87AV_1 2-in-1 PC. It will be $599 starting 11/22/2018 and now it’s $619 on HP Store: https://laptoping.com/specs/buy/3967/

Advantages of this model are its touch-screen with IPS wide viewing angles (many of the other models have narrow viewing angles), a fast 8th Gen Core i5 processor and 8GB RAM which are excellent for Office and similar tasks, and a 1TB hard drive with a lot of free storage space for pics and videos (video files can be quite large). The only downside of this model is that it uses a hard drive for storing files, instead of much faster solid state drive storage. But, the x360 15t 3EC87AV_1 includes Intel Optane technology to speed up storage. It won’t be as fast as an SSD drive, but SSDs with a lot of capacity such as 512GB or 1TB (1000GB) are quite expensive.

Anyway, if you for some reason don’t like the HP Envy x360 15t 3EC87AV_1, for your tasks I would advise you to get a laptop with a 7th or 8th Gen Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor, at least 8GB RAM and 1TB of storage, and an IPS screen if having a good display is important to you. Regards!

    • IMO, 2GB is enough only if you don’t run a web browser and Netflix at the same time. Also, if you open multiple heavier web pages in browser tabs, slowdowns will likely occur, even if you run only your web browser. So, my advice is to get a laptop with at least 4GB RAM. As you can see in the post, they will start at only $120 this Black Friday.

  18. How about this Acer Aspire as a “cloudbook” with some mild gaming: Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM Say I bump the RAM up to 16GB (2 x 8GB – to get dual channel bennies) to increase systems resources, esp those shared with the integrated graphics. Looking for a reasonably cheap Win10 laptop for virtual desktop work, but with some local storage, and moderate gaming capability. Eventually maybe install a SSD, & move OS & programs, to speed it up.

    • It’s a decent machine for under $400. But right now my favorite in that price range is the 13.3-inch Dell Inspiron 13 i3378-3340GRY-PUS 2-in-1 ($379 Cyber Monday price on MS Store listed above) because of IPS touch-screen. A problem with the Dell is that maintenance manual for it isn’t listed on the Dell site so I’m not 100% sure whether it features two RAM slots. But I guess the i3378 is actually 5378 (3378 apparently doesn’t exists in Dell’s official lineup). They look the same and have the same main specs, so I assume they are both identical inside. Meaning the 3378 has 2 RAM slots, as same as the 5378.

But if you’re more into 15.6″ size then the Acer is a good choice, especially after upgrading to dual-channel memory and putting an SSD drive instead of HDD (major speed boost in everyday use.). And if you don’t mind narrow viewing angles of its TN screen.

      • Thx. I did want some more screen because I have to handle multiple docs on occasion, and really had no current use for touchscreen functionality. I think this Aspire will give me a little more flex room than a typical cloudbook (esp w/1 TB HDD over smaller eMMC storage & larger screen) and by upping the RAM and shopping an affordable m.2 SSD, I might be able to squeak some gaming out of what is going to be a backup laptop for work. I am 100% Mac at home and my ability to VPN into work is 100% anti-Mac compatible. Shocking in this day & age, but there it is.Thx again.

        • I wanted an i5 but could not figure a way to swing it at that price point similarly equipped (figuring RAM & SSD upgrade), but I think this will do the trick. I only play one game anyway. WOT.

  19. Hello thanks for posting this. I am looking for a laptop with a screen of 15.6 or 17.3. I am not sure which brand…always had HP. Is Dell better? I just mostly surf the web, play music, and download family photos. Looking for a deal on Cyber Monday.

    • Hi, I don’t own the Helios, but I also found in most reviews that the laptop is producing excessive heat while gaming (but not under light load). Also saw the picture of CPU & GPU fans inside it being too close to each other, which is maybe the cause of not so great cooling.

      Reply
    • Thanks for the heads up, I’ll include those deals soon. Are you interested in the HP 15-bs192od with 8th Gen Intel Core i7 $449.99 from the Office Depot / Max ad? if yes, the deal is good if you do intensive tasks like video / photo editing, music production etc. The CPU is excellent. If you don’t and want to save extra money, the HP 15-bs095ms from MS Store (listed above) has slower yet still excellent CPU, similar specs, and a larger 2TB HDD for $100 less. On the other hand, both of these have old-fashioned HD displays with narrow viewing angles (that’s a deal breaker IMO). Getting a laptop with an IPS Full HD screen would be a major improvement. They start at $550 (15.6-inchers) and you can find them in the list above. As for the Lenovo ($529.99 on the 2nd page of the ad right?), I’ll take a look at it now. Please stay tuned. Cheers.

    • The $529 Lenovo 2-in-1 from the Office Max ad is a good deal in comparison to other BF deals. Especially if you plan to use Lenovo’s active pen with it (sold separately). Active pen feature is very rare at the $500-something price point. On the other hand, on the list above there’s a similar Dell Inspiron 15 5000 2-in-1 which has a better 8th Gen i5 CPU for $30 more, but lacks active pen support.

    • That’s a tough question. It really depends on a particular offer. But, generally I would say on Black Friday price cuts are more aggressive than on Cyber Monday. On the other hand, laptops with huge discounts sell out very quickly during Black Friday / Thanksgiving sales. Oftentimes in just a couple of minutes after the deal goes live.

    • It’s simply an amazing deal. No laptop in the 200-dollar price range has FHD screen nor IPS. The processor is a budget-class but still far better than Intel Celerons, which are more often used in the $200 laptops. The only potentially big downside is limited storage space of only 32GB (and Windows takes up around half of that). But you can expand it with a memory card. In addition, the laptop has a free optical drive bay inside, so you can hack the laptop and put an SSD or HDD drive in that bay.

  20. Hey,

I will be editing a lot of HD video on a laptop. Is there anything below $900 on this list that you would recommend? I’d like to keep it between $600 and $800 if possible but I don’t want something painfully slow either.

    Much appreciated!

    • I would look for two or three things. My processor preference for video editing is the quad-core i7 series. In the list on this page there are a couple of laptops with it. In particular, with the i7-6700HQ and one with the older-generation i7-4720HQ. Both perform very similar. The dual-core i7 and i5 can be also decent for movie making, but the quad-core has a noticeable advantage when you load the CPU with video encoding. I don’t know whether your video editing software supports GPU acceleration. If it does, a laptop with a quad-core i7 and a dedicated video card like the Nvidia GeForce 940M or above is a good investment. Finally, IPS display is a must. You don’t want to deal with narrow viewing angles and color distortion of TN panels while editing videos.

  22. Looking for a little advice if not too far past Cyber Monday. I actually purchased the Costco 1014333 – HP Envy 17. The main specs that drew me were the I7-5500U with a 4GB NVIDEA 850M and 17″ IPS for $699. I’ve since seen an HP Envy 15T Slim at $799 boasting an I7-6700HQ with 4GB NVIDEA 950M and 15″ IPS. Both are 16 GB DDR3L RAM and with the exception of the optical drive in the 15t are very similar. The question is – is the HP 15t as above worth the extra $100. Primary system uses – my son uses it for school and gaming and I will use it for ocassionally for photo editing and drawing/drafting with MS Visio and InkScape.

    Reply
    • The main benefit of the Envy 15t is its faster i7 quad-core CPU instead of dual-core i7. This makes running demanding games easier and will noticeably boost some operations in photo/video editing programs. In common day-to-day web, office, and multimedia playback tasks, the chips offer similar (great) performance. As for the video cards, the Nvidia 950M and 850M offer a very similar performance, with the 950M being only slightly faster.

    • Laptops with integrated graphics like the Intel HD 5500 are not good for gaming generally. For that purpose, recommended are laptops with dedicated video cards, such as the Nvidia 900M series or AMD Radeon M300 series. The cheapest one on this deals list is the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-573G-52G3 with the Nvidia 940M for $518. The HD 5500 can run only light games, while the 940M can run the demanding ones, although not with graphics details quality set to high. For better quality you can choose a laptop with the Nvidia 960M or higher. They start at around $750.

If not, I think I will just buy the Yoga 900 open box from Best Buy for 1079$; I just can’t stand how slow my Yoga 3 Pro is with the core M right now. 26. Hey,
Just came across this and thought it was amazing! I was just wondering what your take on is with Lenovo? Their Black Friday deals seems too good to be true at what they are priced at, and after reading reviews about them I’m not so sure I want to buy. The alternative second was the Alienware 15, even though Lenovo is offering some pretty nice specs that Alienware isn’t. I feel that there’s an obvious choice for some, but wanted some advice and don’t want make a purchasing mistake. The laptop I am replacing is a 2010-2011 XPS L501X with specs far behind either of these two (I’ll post below), so after 5 years, ANYTHING is better.

    Current laptop:

    Dell XPS 15 (L501X):
    Intel® Core™ i5 460M Processor (3MB cache, 2.53GHz)
    NVIDIA GeForce GT420M with 1GB DDR3
    6GB DDR3 memory
    500GB 7200rpm HDD (Seagate Momentus 7200.4)

    Replacement Laptops:

    Lenovo Y700, priced at $1,149.00:
    6th Generation Intel® Core i7-6700HQ (2.60GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
    Windows 10 Home
    16.0 GB PC4-17000 DDR4 2133 MHz
    1TB 5400 RPM+128GB SSD
15.6″ Ultra HD IPS LED Backlit (3840×2160)
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB
    Intel Wireless-AC 8260 and Bluetooth 4.0
    4 Cell 60 Watt Hour Li-Polymer
    ———————————————–

    Alienware 15, priced at $1,199.99:
    Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ (Quad-Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.5GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
    Windows 10 Home
    8GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2133MHz (4GBx2)
    1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s
    15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare 220-nits Display
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 970M with 3GB GDDR5
    Killer 1535 802.11ac 2×2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1
8-cell Lithium Ion (92 Wh) Battery

As I said, anything is going to be better than what I have, I know that, I just want to make sure that I’m getting the most for my money on this current purchase, without compromising reliability etc going with a certain brand and end up with a “shoulda-coulda” situation down the line. Any input would help out. Thanks a lot!

    Reply
    • I can’t comment on reliability since I have used only the Y700 for a short period (I have no complaints about its display quality or build quality). Specs-wise, I would personally choose the Alienware, because of the noticeably better Nvidia 970M GPU, especially if you’re into gaming. The GPU makes the Alienware more future-proof than the Lenovo. Yes, the Alienware 15 lacks SSD and has smaller RAM, but you can add them yourself later, since the laptop has two M.2 SSD and two RAM slots accessible via a removable cover on the bottom. As for the display resolution, having an Ultra HD screen on a Windows laptop isn’t necessarily a better option than Full HD, because of still present scaling problems in some apps and games.

      • Thank you for replying! I really do appreciate your insight and you definitely help solidify my decision. I was already leaning towards that buy because of having this Dell gift card from the past, but of course just had to hear it from someone else. Just purchased the Alienware with upgrading the RAM and Memorey to match that of the Lenovo’s and let’s just say I get to have my cake and eat it too..After the holiday sale and gift card, it came out to a mere total of $1,331.48 (this is inc tax/shipping). Definitely can’t wait for it to arrive. Thanks again for the advice about the the display res as well, I thought I heard that before in the past but thought it no it wasn’t applying still. :)

But, if you can spend $550 this Black Friday / Cyber Monday, the HP Envy x360 m6-w103dx and HP Pavilion 15-ab292nr Signature Edition additionally deliver IPS wide viewing angle display technology, Plus, the HP Pavilion 15-ab292nr includes a quad-core i7 CPU, which is recommended if you do a lot of photography editing, video editing and similar demanding tasks.

You can find links to these laptops in the laptop list in the post above.

        • You can by a second battery for the i5558-5718SLV via Dell.com. Search for Dell Inspiron 5558 battery.

Regarding, the Inspiron 3000 you linked to, it’s only slightly better in the graphics and CPU departments. It has the low-end GeForce 820M graphics, but is better than the integrated Intel HD in the i5558. Also the i5 CPU is from the newer 5th Generation instead of 4th, meaning a bit better performance. Everything else is better on the i5558 – display, RAM and HDD capacities, keyboard with backlight, and better designed chassis.

    • In short, if you want the best performance the HP Pavilion 15-ab292nr with a quad-core i7 CPU is the way to go, while the HP Envy m6 has the best chassis design with aluminum on the palmrest and LCD lid. I would exclude the Dell, since it lacks IPS technology for wide viewing angles and therefore isn’t as good for movie watching as the previous two.

  29. Hi Danijel. Thank you for this article and all of your input! I am looking at the Dell Inspiron with 5th gen i7 laptop from Dell Cyber Monday sale or the Toshiba Intel i7 at Staples. Do you recommend one over the other? Or is there a better 15.6 option available? I use the laptop mainly for movies/music, work, and light gaming.

    Thank you!

    • Hi, Tiffany. What I don’t like about the laptops you mentioned ( Dell Inspiron 3000 listed in the Cyber Monday ad for $599 and Toshiba S55-C5274 for $599 from Staples Black Friday ad, right?) are their displays. For under $600 you can get a laptop with much better Full HD resolution and also IPS technology for wide viewing angles, which will greatly improve picture quality for your movies. A good option is the HP Envy x360 m6-w103dx with Full HD / IPS and additionally touch / flip display and sleek design for $549 at Best Buy on Black Friday- listed above. The m6-w103dx includes a bit slower i5 CPU instead of i7, but chances are you will never notice the difference during the tasks you mentioned. Now, the Cyber Monday Dell Inspiron has a dedicated video card which greatly improves gaming performance, but it you play only light games you can maybe get away with only the basic Intel HD integrated graphics. As for the Toshiba S55 deal, it has no meaningful advantages over the Dell nor HP Envy x360 m6, plus to get the price of $599.99 you have to deal with a $50 rebate. After instant off only its $649.99. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

      • Thank you so much for weighing in! After I wrote this post, I found the HP Pavilion 15-ab292nr which it seems will come down to $549 also at the Microsoft store. Aside from the Envy being a 2 in 1, how do these two stack up? I appreciate your feedback! Thanks again!

        • At $549, the Pavilion 15-ab292nr will be definitely a good Black Friday deal, especially given it has a FHD IPS screen. In comparison to the Envy x360 m6, the main advantage of the Pavilion is much faster quad-core i7 processor instead of the dual-core i5. Not necessarily noticeable during the light day-to-day tasks, but it can complete demanding operations like video transcoding or photography editing much quicker. In addition, its Intel HD 530 integrated graphics is slightly faster than the HD 520, but still just an entry-level graphics solution.

What I don’t like about the Pavilion is a low capacity 41 WHr battery for a laptop with the power-hungry quad-core i7 (45-Watt TDP). The Envy with the 15-Watt i5 has a 48 WHr unit, so it will definitely last noticeably longer when unplugged from the grid.

Also, Envy has a prettier chassis with aluminum lid and keyboard deck, instead of all-plastics design of the Pavilion.

          Another Envy’s important advantage – keyboard backlight…

Thank you that you share this info with us. My question is, which of the I want to ask you which of the laptops of Black Friday’s deals are the best for graphic design work on Adobe programs and eventually 3d MAX? Now i have MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011); 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5;8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3;ntel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB. So I want to sell it and buy something much better. Could you help me,please! Which is the best offer for laptop to buy it this black Friday?
    Thank you, in advance:)

    • For your tasks, I would recommend a laptop with a quad-core Intel i5 or even better i7 CPU combined with a dedicated video card and Full HD IPS display. On the list, there are currently two of them which I would recommend: Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK and Lenovo Y700 80NW000PUS. Please keep in mind this list is for Windows-based machines only, but still the Dell and Lenovo are excellent for your tasks without costing too much. And better than MacBook Black Friday offers.

  31. Hi Danijel,

First off thank you for creating this post, it was very helpful and informative. I was just wondering what you thought of the HP Pavilion i7-5500U from Sam’s Black Friday ad? My budget is around $400-$600 and I want to get the most bang for my buck since it’s a big purchase for me and I won’t be buying another laptop for a while. I plan to use it mainly for internet browsing (I open a lot of tabs though), streaming, and schoolwork. Any insight is appreciated.

  33. What are the main differences between HP’s Pavilion and Envy lines? Do the HP’s have room to add an SSD inside them, and if so, do they have the cable connection already in place for such an addition?

    Reply
    • Generally, HP Envy is a higher-end laptop line, usually with Full HD or above displays, keyboard backlight, SSD storage and aluminum casings, while Pavilions belongs to the mid-range and most of the time sport standard HD screens, non-backlit keyboards, traditional HDDs, and plastic shells. However, the line between them has recently became blurred, since you now have some Pavilion configurations with Full HD displays, keyboard backlight, and SSD. At the same time HP offers some affordable Envy configurations with HD displays and no key backlight.

Regarding additional SSDs, select Envy models have a M.2 SSD slot besides a standard HDD. As far as I know, the current Pavilion laptops don’t include that feature.

So, the differences depend on a particular model / configuration. If you have a question about any particular model, feel free to ask.

    • The manual says the hard drive in the Envy m6 is a “self-repair” part, meaning you can upgrade it to SSD yourself without voiding the warranty. The procedure is explained on the page 38 of the manual. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04498499.pdf

As for SATA 2 or 3 question, there is no info about that, but these two are compatible. So SATA 2 and 3 SSDs should work in the m6.

    • The problem with the AMD A10 CPU in the Dell Inspiron at Sam’s is that it’s a just released one, so no graphics benchmarks are available yet. But it is expected to match or slightly surpass performance of the well-known Intel i5-4210U with Intel HD 4400 graphics. If you want to risk a bit, go for it. Otherwise, the Dell Inspiron 15 i15547-5033sLV at Microsoft Store for the same price on Black Friday and with the Intel i5/HD 4400 is a safer bet and is one of the best laptop deals this year. Here’s what gaming looks like on the Intel HD 4400: https://laptoping.com/haswells-intel-hd-4400-gaming-and-benchmarks-round-up.html

      • After browsing and checking out your links I’m leaning towards the Microsoft offer. Both laptops really do seem pretty compatible but it also seems like Microsoft has a bit more to offer through the warranty, customer service, and virus protection on the “Signature” series. The touchscreen is also a plus and from what I’m reading you get a bit more out of the battery as well.

    • If you can spend $100 more, the HP is a better option. It’s overall better equipped, although it has a smaller hard drive of 750GB vs 1000GB.

First, the HP uses a faster full-voltage i5 version with slightly faster Intel HD 4600 graphics, instead of the ultra-low-voltage i5 with HD 4400 in the Dell. In everyday tasks, the difference won’t be noticeable and both chips are perfect for that, but when you throw something more demanding at them like high-resolution photo editing, the difference will be noticeable. Gaming on the HP will be slightly smoother than on the Dell, although both aren’t suitable for heavier games like Crysis or Battlefield. Minecraft, League of Legends and such will work fine.

In addition, the HP has touchscreen, keyboard backlight, subwoofer speaker, and overall looks better IMO. On the negative side, it is a bit heavier and the battery life will be probably shorter than on the Dell.

    • I haven’t used these laptops, so I can comment only on their specs. Generally, the only big improvement you get with the Samsung for additional $100 (it’s $1,100 right now and Asus is $1,000) is a faster processor. The i7-3635QM quad-core in the Samsung is much better performance-wise than the Asus’ i7-4500U: ~6,500 Pasmark CPU points versus ~3,700. On the other hand the i7-4500U runs cooler and consumer much less energy. The Nvidia GPU in the Asus is slightly better than the Radeon HD in the Samsung. As you’ve probably already noticed, in other aspects these notebooks offer nearly identical specs, so my conclusion is that you should go for the Samsung only if you do a lot of CPU-intensive tasks like video editing or for instance work large RAW image files and if you prefer its design. In normal daily tasks, you won’t notice much difference between the two.

    • From these three I would exclude the #3 Toshiba because of a slower CPU than on the #1 Toshiba and Lenovo (I assume you’re considering this Lenovo model: http://amzn.to/1jSK13j ). The #1 Toshiba has the fastest processor among these, but the Lenovo doesn’t lag behind much and is quite suitable for all the tasks you listed. Touchscreen does add to the overall price of a laptop with it, but it certainly isn’t an error buying it if the price of the laptop is reasonable like on the S400. Why not trying out a new (and IMO very convenient) way for interaction with Windows and apps? Overall, the Toshiba #1 is a better choice only if you really want to have a slightly larger screen than the Lenovo (but both have the same resolution / space for OS and apps) and you really need a DVD burner. Otherwise, the Lenovo S400 is more portable, has touchscreen, and looks more stylish.

              • Yes, Amazon is one of the best known and most popular online retailers, so I don’t see any problem buying a laptop there. You can also check out Best Buy, Microsoft Store, Newegg, TigerDirect and others as well as directly HP, Lenovo, Dell store, etc.

  44. Can you tell me which is the better computer (I need to replace my laptop since my kids broke mine the other day by bouncing on the bed and dropping it on the floor!):

    1. Toshiba C55-A5308 Laptop – 4GB memory; 750GB hard drive;
    15.6″ HD display; 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i3 processor; Windows 8
    Best Buy: $349 package

    2. Lenovo G500 15.6″ Laptop – 4GB Memory – 1TB Hard Drive (Model: 59399508)
    3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i5-3230M processor
    Best Buy: $399 this weekend

I know the Toshiba doesn’t list the processor speed, but wondered if one was better than the other. I had a Toshiba Satellite and other than the casing cracking last year and needing to be replaced, I’ve had no problems with it – the speed is good, etc.

I basically use mine for Internet stuff (usually have lots of tabs open), Word or similar document work, and pictures/music downloads/uploads. My friends have said I should just get a tablet instead of a new laptop because I do carry it around the house from room to room with me and usually end up lugging the laptop cord around, too.

Therefore, I’ve had my eye also on the iPad Air and the Google Nexus 10. Do you have an opinion on either of those and which is the better to use for my purposes (and I would also get a case with a keyboard for a hybrid feel to the tablet).

    Thanks much!

    • If you don’t do video editing and work with large images in Photoshop often, you’ll be fine with the Toshiba C55-A5308, but if you do you should go for the Lenovo which has a faster processor. In my opinion, Windows is still superior over iPads and Google Android tablets when it comes to productivity and since you said you work with documents I think Windows is a way to go. Plus, it’s better for multi-tab web surfing (if you have at least 4GB of RAM and an Intel Pentium, Core i3 / i5 / i7 processor). I have one suggestion regarding portability: for $499.99 you can get the HP Split X2 13-g110dx listed in the table above. It’s much more portable than the 15.6-inchers and you can detach the screen and use it as a classic tablet, while still having performance of the Core i3 CPU for multiple browser tabs and office work. It’s really worth spending $100 more and get a device which is both a tablet and a laptop and has a longer battery life. More about the Split X2: https://laptoping.com/hp-split-x2-13-m110dx-x2-laptoptablet-hybrid.html If your budget is up to $400 another similar option is the Asus Transformer Book T100 https://laptoping.com/asus-transformer-book-t100ta-c1-gr-cheap-hybrid-with-64gb-ssd.html, but it isn’t fast enough if you do productivity on daily basis.

      • Thank you so much for your input! A follow up question…

I don’t know much about the laptop/tablet hybrids. What would be the benefit of one of those as opposed to a Google Nexus 10 or an Apple ipad Air, especially if I get a cover with a keyboard attached to it?

        Reply
        • If you just watch Youtube videos, read magazines, and play online games, you won’t notice much difference between a Windows 8 tablet, iPad, and Google Nexus, but for me it’s much easier to do text document or spreadsheet editing on a Windows 8 device, because it’s designed for both keyboard/mouse and touch. On the other side keyboard/mouse is only an alternative use on Android tabs and iPads and use of mouse pointer and keyboard shortcuts (for copy/paste, letter selection etc) isn’t even close in terms of usability to Windows devices. In addition, Microsoft Word and MS Office can be installed only on Windows PCs. There are alternatives to Office for iPads and Android, but they still lag behind MS Office.

Another thing is support for external devices such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, etc, which is much better on Windows tablets. Also, multi-user setups aren’t available on iPad / Android. Plus, if you choose a Win tablet / hybrid with an Intel Core i3 / i5 or i7 it’ll do most of the tasks way faster than current iPad / Android slates, like web browsing with many tabs opened, image editing, office docs editing etc. There are also Windows tablet-laptops with Intel Atom processors, but they’re about equal with CPUs in the latest iPad / Android tablets and are designed for only light tasks.

    • Can you tell me your screen-size preference and budget? Do you need a DVD burner? The Toshiba Satellite is a popular brand, but there are different variations of it. For instance, the Satellite C-series such as C55 has a plastic body and basic specifications, whereas the P-series such as the P55 have classy aluminum cases and optionally high-end components like quad-core processors, dedicated video cards for gaming, and nice features like full HD displays and keyboard backlight. It all depends on the model you choose.

      • Even in light tasks you described, you’ll notice the speed difference between these models. For comparison, the Celeron 1037U has 1739 passmark.com CPU points, the 2020M has 2315, and the expected Core i3 3110M or 3120M in the A5308 model are rated at 3,064 / 3,307. Therefore, the latter is the best choice for you out of these three models. You’ve also maybe noticed the Toshiba Satellite C55-A5285 with the i3-3120M for $300 in the table. • Yeah, it’s 8GB. An error on our end, sorry. The model is listed in the Costco Black Friday ad. The ad says it has a quad-core 4th Gen i7 and the i7-4700MQ is the only quad-core 4th Gen i7 CPU among the HP 15t configurations so I think the same CPU is in the #809193. They haven’t published a page on costco.com for that item number, so we have no info on the screen resolution yet, but we’ll update the table above as soon as we get the specs.

        • The announced 809193 Costco model is the fastest $600 laptop for this Black Friday so far according to ads. If you add a quad-speaker system, great aluminum build-quality and keyboard with nice tactile response (and maybe backlight option included) the deal is probably the best choice for shoppers with a 600-dollar budget and no touchscreen preference. The only questions remaining are the screen resolution, keyboard backlight, and battery life, but even if it has a 1366×768 screen and no key backlight, the deal is still great. You can check out the live images of the HP 15t in a post about the same laptop with the old i5 chip (15-j011dx): https://laptoping.com/hp-envy-15-j011dx-standard-15-6-laptop-with-quad-speakers.html . I don’t need to worry about battery life so this might be what I am going to go for. A backlight keyboard and better screen resolution would be amazing as well but they are not deal breakers for me.

            • I’m not sure, the pricing and specs do match up, but the item numbers are totally different, so maybe there is some difference. It looks like there’s no way to avoid shipping charges…

You can also wait to see if there will be any Black Friday or regular coupons for HP’s official store. They have the same laptop there, it’s called the 15t-j100 Quad Edition. It’s $830 now with the i7/8GB/1TB + keyboard backlight. Full HD adds $50 to the price. If HP delivers a good enough coupon, you’ll maybe be able to get a better deal if you buy directly from them. Unfortunately, HP site charges shipping as well.
