Gateway NE56R49U

Gateway NE56R49U

If you were considering buying the 15.6-inch NE56R48U laptop with the Intel Pentium B960 processor for $300, the Gateway NE56R49U will give you a second thought. For $50 more, or $350 precisely, the NE56R49U delivers a faster Core i3 CPU and a larger 500GB hard drive, up from 320GB. (Note: The laptop is currently unavailable on the market.)

The included chip is the Core i3-3110M from the latest “Ivy Bridge” generation, with much better computing muscle than the B-series Pentium from the older “Sandy Bridge” lineup. The main additional feature of the mentioned i3 is HyperThreading, allowing better multitasking and performance generally. Also, the built-in Intel HD 4000 GPU is better than the older Intel HD on the Pentium. But, it isn’t a gaming-class graphics processor by no means.

Among other features, the Gateway’s NE56R49U has 4GB of RAM, a DVD burner, stereo speakers, webcam, three USB ports, HDMI, and a six-cell battery.

It has a silver / black chassis made of glossy plastics and a classic-style keyboard without big spacing between keys, which are, on the positive side, pretty much large.

  2. I have this laptop and I have been very satisfied until recently. My laptop has stopped charging itself. At first I just had to jiggle the cord around the plug in on the lap top to get it to charge. However the problem got persistently worse. I ordered a new charger, no luck. Today it stopped charging all together. The manufacturer’s warranty is one year and I bought my laptop one year and a month and a half ago.I was 16 when I bought it, I don’t have a job and i dropped nearly $400 with tax and all. My issue could be a fluke, but fair warning.

    • I keep getting the same problem. Keeping the Internet connected is a challenge on Gateway NE56R49u.

I refreshed the wifi driver many times. I checked but Gateway does not offer upgraded or updated driver on their website. It maybe windows 8.1 related or its Gateway.

      • I’m just guessing here, but disabling “selective suspend” on your Wi-Fi adapter might help. Go to Control Panel / Device Manager / Network Adapters / your Wi-Fi adapter / right-click / Properties / Advanced / disable Selective Suspend.

  6. Paying anything over $20 for this worthless piece of crap computer is highway robbery. It can’t even handle the mundane task of bringing up gmail login page without having to think about it and make you wait for about 90 seconds. Total trash. Don’t waste your time or money.

    • Try searching for “Gateway NE56R battery replacement”, you’ll find it on various online stores. NE56R is the name of the series which the NE56R49U belongs to. Serial numbers on laptops are usually located on the bottom of the chassis.

    • Yeah, Gateway became Acer’s subsidiary a couple of years ago. Gateway brand is usually cheaper while offering basically the same components and looks. This model is just one of the examples.
