In the Search bar on the Taskbar in Windows 11, there’s an illustrative image by default, which some users may find distracting.

The clickable image is there to highlight the search recommendations of content that Microsoft finds interesting. The image changes periodically, depending on the topic being recommended.

If you don’t want the search recommendations and prefer a more streamlined look and feel of the Search bar and Windows interface, there is a simple way to remove the illustration.

Here’s how to do that:

  • Go to Windows Settings / Privacy & Security / Search permissions. Some of the easy ways to enter the Settings is to use the Windows Key + i keyboard shortcut. Or, you can just type “Search permissions” in the Search bar and hit Enter to go to the Search permissions directly. Or, click on the Search bar, click on the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner of the search menu pop-up, and click on the Search settings item on the list to open the Search permissions window.

  • On the Search permissions window, under the More settings subtitle, there’s a Show search highlights toggle button.
  • Toggle the Show search highlights button off to remove the illustrative image from the Search bar.

And that’s it.

Besides removing the image from the Search field, turning the search highlights off also removes the content recommendations from the search menu that pops up when you click on the Search bar.

The process of removing the image is similar on Windows 10.
