The Asus F554LA (F554LA-WS52, F554LA-WS71) is a traditional all-purpose notebook PC with no touchscreen nor convertible design, but with a standard-size 15.6-inch display, good performance, and an affordable starting price tag at below $500.

Currently, there are two models of the laptop series available in the US – the F554LA-WS52 with the Intel Core i5-5200U processor and a 500GB hard drive and the F554LA-WS71 with the faster i7-5500U CPU and larger 1-Terabyte hard drive. Coupled with capacious 8GB of RAM memory on both models, the i5 and i7 dual-core chips with their integrated HD 5500 graphics can effortlessly serve all your day-to-day computing needs – Internet browsing, emailing, work in Word and Excel programs, movie playback, and casual low-end gaming. As a matter of fact, the CPUs are the second best choice for more demanding tasks like photography editing or video production, after the quad-core i7 chips. 8GB of RAM offers a plenty of headroom for heavy multitasking. The 500GB and 1TB hard drive provide enough storage space for most users. Although they feature the standard 5,400rpm laptop HDD rotational speed, this type of storage is way slower than any solid state drive available on the market.

Asus F554LA (F554LA-WS52, F554LA-WS71) 15.6 Inch Laptop 2

As for the display, the Asus F554LA-WS52 and F554LA-WS71 feature standardly-specced 15.6” TN-based panel with 1366-by-768-pixel resolution. Therefore, it lacks sharpness of the Full HD 1920×1080 and wide viewing angles of the IPS-based LCDs. If you still want a Full HD display, the PC maker offers the similar F555LA-AB31 model, which is among the most affordable Full HD laptops.

On the display’s foothill, there’s a standard isle-style keyboard with numeric pad, and big trackpad with integrated click action buttons. The keyboard has no backlight, but that’s a common occurrence on inexpensive notebooks.

The rest of the specs sheet reveals the F554 is a well-equipped machine. It does have a DVD optical drive, unlike many modern notebooks, and also features stereo speakers, a low-quality VGA web camera, wired Ethernet LAN and wireless 802.11N Wi-Fi network interfaces, Bluetooth, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port, dual external display outputs via HDMI and VGA connectors, a media card reader, and a combo mic-headphones audio jack.

Asus F554LA (F554LA-WS52, F554LA-WS71) 3

According to Asus’ technical support, the battery life on this laptop can last “6 to 7” hours on a full charge. That’s a great battery life for this type of a laptop, but keep in mind that their estimation might be based on very light computing use and with significantly decreased screen brightness settings. After all, the included 37 WHr battery isn’t considered to be a high-capacity one.

Regarding design, the F554LA features a common plastics cladded chassis. It stands out a bit with its textured anti-slip and anti-smudge pattern. Thickness of the laptop is 1”. The weight is 4.9 pounds, so the notebook is averagely bulky for the given screen size.

The F554LA-WS52 and F554LA-WS71 come pre-loaded with old Windows 8.1 OS version, but you are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10.
