Dell Inspiron 15 3000 3558 i3558 Basic 15.6” Laptop (Intel Celeron / Pentium, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD / 128GB SSD)

The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 3558, also known as i3558, is an entry-level 15.6-inch laptop PC. It offers budget-class notebook specs wrapped in a simplistic-looking black chassis made of plastics.

As for the main internal components, the Dell 3558 / i3558 models sold in the United States offer the basic Intel Celeron and Pentium processor choices, 4GB of system memory which is a bare minimum for serious work and play, and a commonly sized 500GB hard drive storage or a 128GB solid state drive with smaller capacity but much faster performance.

The provided Intel Celeron N3050 dual-core and Pentium N3700 quad-core processor choices are both usable for routine computing tasks of average users. The N3700 is a pricier option, but a good one if you want smoother Windows 10 and software experience than with the lowest-end Celeron 3050. However, you should keep in mind that the Pentium and especially the Celeron should be avoided if you plan to regularly use the notebook for heavier stuff like photography or video editing.

Thankfully, Dell has enabled users to access storage and memory easily and replace them. They can be reached via a dedicated bottom cover held by only two screws.

The display is a standard one, with a 1366-by-768 resolution and glossy coating. Touch input and IPS technology for wide viewing angles are missing.

The 3558 features a full-size keyboard with a numeric pad, but no key backlight. The touchpad features integrated “mouse” buttons.

With these specs, the Inspiron 3558 is very similar to the 3552 series. The main difference between them is in the optical drive department, where the 3558 lacks any, while the 3552 is optionally available with a DVD burner. On the other hand, the 3558 provides an Ethernet LAN port, which is missing on the 3552. Both laptops have stereo speakers, a 720p webcam, the previous-gen 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless interface instead of newer and faster 802.11ac, Bluetooth, two USB 2.0 ports and a single USB 3.0, HDMI video out, a multi-format media card reader, and a combo audio port.

Another user-replacement-friendly part is the externally mounted battery. The 40 WHr unit is standardly-sized for a budget laptop. There’s no info on battery life for the 3558, but the 3552 with the same main components is claimed to provide up to eight hours, according to Dell.

Weighing in at 4.7 pounds, the Dell Inspiron 15 3000 3558 / i3558 is lighter than an average 15.6″ laptop weighing above 5 lbs. The chassis is 0.9″ thick, so the notebook is overall a quite portable 15.6-incher.
