HP Pavilion 17-g015dx 17.3″ Laptop with Intel i7 CPU

HP Pavilion 17-g015dx

The HP Pavilion 17-g015dx is a 17.3-inch mainstream laptop with an excellent processor. It’s aimed at those who want a plenty of screen real estate and fast performance at a reasonable price.

Besides the Intel Core i7-5500U dual-core CPU with the Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics, the HP 17-g015dx offers 6GB of system memory which is enough for day-to-day multitasking scenarios, and a 750GB hard disk drive with decent amount of storage space but low read-write performance in comparison to solid state drives. The laptop has a built-in DVD burner.

The screen has a resolution of 1600×900 pixels, which is a standard one for 17.3″ mainstream notebooks. However, the picture isn’t as sharp as on 1920×1080 Full HD displays which are becoming a standard on the laptop market. IPS technology for wider viewing angles is also missing, as well as touchscreen functionality. For interaction with Windows and programs, there are a spacious keyboard with numeric pad but no backlight, as well as a multi-touch trackpad with integrated click buttons.

The palmrest features dark-gray finish with brushed metal-like appearance, while the lid is plain with light gray paint on it.

The user-removable battery has a mediocre capacity of 41 WHr, which should translate to about four hours of battery life under light computing tasks and lowered screen brightness.

Because of weight of 6.2 pounds, the HP Pavilion 17-g015dx certainly isn’t a good travel companion. It’s meant to sit on the desk most of the time and act as a desktop PC replacement. The chassis is 1.1″ thick.

  1. Jacob S. – August 30, 2015:

Would this laptop be capable of handling games like minecraft, call of duty, and rocket league?

    • Danijel Z – August 30, 2015:

      Check out this review:

      http://laptoping.com/gpus/product/intel-hd-5500-graphics-reviews-and-specs/

In the review, there are videos showing performance of the included Intel HD 5500 graphics in various games including Minecraft (runs smoothly) and CoD Advanced Warfare (lags). We haven’t tested Rocket League.

The HP 17-g015dx will have slightly better performance than described in the review, since it has the i7 CPU as opposed to tested i5.
