The HP Split x2 13-r010dx is the first available model with a refreshed design of the Split x2 13.3-inch 2-in-1 laptop/tablet hybrid series with detachable keyboard. In comparison to the previous Split, keyboard now has ports on the back instead of on the sides and the lid of the tablet is more streamlined. Inside, the 13-r010dx retains Intel’s computing technology. The model comes with the 4th Gen Intel Core i3-4012Y which is very power efficient and provides lower-mid-range performance. This means quite fluid operation of the device when it comes to the routine tasks of the average user, such as web, office document work, multimedia playback, etc. But, it’s not optimized for more complex duties such as multimedia creation or 3D gaming.

The multitouch display has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels. The device is additionally expected to be available with a Full HD 1920×1080 screen. It’s important to note that the panel is backed by IPS technology, so wide viewing angles are guaranteed.

HP has changed internal storage in the new version. It’s now based on cheaper hard drive storage, instead of faster but more expensive and generally smaller-capacity solid state drive. Another downgrade data storage-wise is absence of a secondary hard disk which can be found in some configurations of the previous Split version. Thankfully, the 500GB HDD in the 13-r010dx is supplemented with a bit of SSD goodness – 8GB of it precisely, so loading files and program launches won’t be as laggy as on HDDs without help of SSD. RAM memory size is standard – 4GB. That’s enough for everyday computer use without issues.

A dual battery system of the original version with one unit in the tablet portion and another one in the keyboard dock is still present on the new Split, according to the official product manual for it. But, it isn’t clear if the 13-r010dx model in particular comes with both of them, since the official specs sheets mention only one battery located in the tablet part. We’ll update this part of the article as soon as we find out whether they’re both included or not.

HP Split x2 13-r010dx 2

The new HP Split x2 line and the 13-r010dx itself have stereo speakers with sound enhanced by Beats Audio technology and a 1080p webcam located on the front of the tablet. It has also Wi-Fi wireless and Bluetooth interfaces. Two USB 3.0 ports and HDMI video out are located on the keyboard dock. The slate portion of the device has a microSD card slot, while the keyboard holds a classic laptop-use multi-in-one media card reader with support for full size SD cards and other formats. What’s missing are an Ethernet LAN port for wired Internet connection and traditional VGA video connector.

Although it’s not specifically stated by HP, the 13-r010dx appears to be made of plastics. The keyboard deck is silver with white keyboard keys on it, while the lid is white. The slate weighs 2.4 pounds, while the dock measures 1.9 pounds. So, in total the device weighs 4.3 pounds, which is somewhat heavy in comparison to the classic 13.3-inch laptops. The slate and base are 0.5″ and 0.4″ thick, respectively.

Has anyone been able to upgrade the RAM on this machine to 8GB?
I bought 2 units for myself and my daughter as I like the tab functionality so well, now they are stalling and seem to be generally slow.

I need advise on where to take them for possible servicing/repairs and what is likely the cost of the 8GB RAM?

    Thank you

  2. Jummie

The keyboard stopped functioning just after the USB ports ceased in recognising flash drives. The tab now appears to be a foreign body to the keyboard as any time it is docked, the system stops functioning. How do I have this resolved urgently as I really love the laptop?

do you sell keyboard alone. As the keyboard has malfunctioned.

I have owned this model 2 in 1 for several months. I like this solid setup. However, there are a few things I want to address. Before I bought this unit, I researched it online. The reviews talk about a 2nd battery and 2nd hard drive slot. Apparently these are missing the 2nd battery. And the base has the 500gb hd plus the 8gb ssd is in the tablet.
The biggest mistake when this model was built is that all the ports are in the keyboard base.
So as a tablet you have no ports.
Otherwise I really like this computer. As I said, this model is very solid and sturdy. To some the weight might be heavy. But it is just well built.

Does this new model come with the second hard drive installed in the base?
Or a spot setup to add a second SSD hard drive?
Also, does this model include the second battery feature in the base?
I have read a lot of reviews that contradict each other, or just say they do not
know for sure. When I research this model number on YouTube, it comes up
with a Split x2 13-r010dx 2-in-1 Ultrabook. However it is not the same as the
pictures, older Intel i3 processor, and different hard drive specs. I’m confused…
Thank you for your assistance, William
