Gateway LT4008u Netbook

Gateway LT4008u

The Gateway LT4008u 10.1″ netbook in River Black color is easily the most affordable laptop-like computer on the market today.

The LT4008u is priced at only $198.00 at Walmart. The extremely low price doesn’t mean the netbook is based on some a couple of years old technology. Contrary, it sports the latest Intel Atom N2600 dual-core “Cedar Trail” processor, which has 1080p video support as the main differentiator when compared to the older Atom chips. Also, the netbook includes HDMI output, rarely seen on older ones.

Judging from the specs sheet, the main trade-offs of the LT4008u are only 1GB of RAM, which is on the other side standard for netbooks, as well as the included 3-cell battery instead of a 6-cell one. Small memory amount, which simply isn’t sufficient for Windows 7 multitasking, wouldn’t be a problem if the netbook’s bottom provides access to RAM for upgrades. However, we weren’t able to find info on manufacturer’s site if RAM is user upgradeable on this system. If it is, we don’t see a big problem here. Regarding the battery, its 2200mAh capacity is only a half of 4400mAh of commonly used 6-cell units, but Gateway claims that it will be good for up to 4 hours of use anyway.

The HDD capacity is 320GB and the LT4008u also features a 0.3MP web camera. Three USB ports are a standard setup for a netbook, but all three can transfer data at up to USB 2.0 speeds, whereas most of the 2012 netbooks include at least one much faster USB 3.0 connector.

The netbook weighs 2.31 pounds and is 1″ thin, so it’s fairly easy to tote it around. Its textured finish gives it a little bit stylish look. The interior is grayish, while the lid is black.

Overall, this mini-laptop isn’t a good solution for multitasking and the battery life isn’t great, but it’s good for multimedia playback and limited tasks such as single-window web browsing, email, or word processing.

  2. I upgraded the memory, and the computer is a bit faster, i wanted to upgrade to windows 10 but it is not compatible. I installed linux mint it works well too. battery improvements are cheap I think and possibly it would work better with an ssd

  4. This machine is a little slow and the Windows 7 Basic doesn’t have much flexibility but the portibility is great. If you need to take a piece of computer equipment with you that is better than your smart phone but you can’t carry a standard laptop…this is a good little machine. I can take it to places where a full size laptop won’t fit and for the price – it’s a good buy. I wish I could have gotten it in something other than black – but is looks pretty sleek.
