Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5579 / i5579 15.6″ 2-in-1 Touch Laptop with 8th Gen Intel Core
The Dell 5579 / i5579 is a 2-in-1 convertible from the PC maker’s Inspiron 15 5000 mainstream 15.6-inch laptop series. Besides standard laptop functionality with uncompromised performance and high display resolution, the i5568 allows you to transform the touch-enabled device into a tablet or multimedia / presentation stand, thanks to its band-back design.
The heart of this elegant-looking silver-colored notebook PC with plastic chassis is Intel’s latest 8th Generation Core processor series, running Windows 10 operating system. Customers can choose between the Intel Core i5-8250U and Intel Core i7-8550U, with the latter being slightly faster. These quad-core chips provide undoubtedly smooth daily-use experience and offer a great potential for those who do a lot of processing-intensive work like Photoshop edits or video file conversion. The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5579 / i5579 isn’t aimed at gamers at all, but the Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics can run many popular non-demanding game titles.
As a side note, basically the same laptop is still available with the older and slower 7th Gen Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs under Inspiron 5578 name. These are great dual-core CPUs for the daily duties, but the quad-core i5-8250U and i7-8550U are noticeably faster under heavy load.
Depending on how many operations you plan to do simultaneously, you can select either 8 or 12 Gigabytes of main system memory when purchasing the 5579 / i5579. Both sizes are more than sufficient for day-to-day multitasking. For storing your programs and file libraries, the laptop can be equipped with a 1-Terabyte hard drive, or a smaller but way faster solid state drive with 256GB or 512GB capacity. The notebook doesn’t have a bulit-in DVD burner.
The only available resolution or the multi-touch screen is 1920×1080-pixel Full HD. It provides very decent picture sharpness by 15.6″ laptop standards. Image quality is further enhanced by IPS technology for wide viewing angles, a feature missing on most lower-cost notebooks. The laptop has a spacious keyboard with chiclet-style keys and key backlight.
There are also stereo speakers, a 720p web camera, Wi-Fi 802.11AC wireless network interface, Bluetooth, two USB 3.1 ports and additionally a USB 2.0, HDMI external display connector, combo mic / headphones audio jack, and a microSD memory card reader. As an extra perk, a built-in infra-red sensor for easy face recognition-based log-ins is optionally available.
As for the battery, Dell has included a medium-capacity 42WHr unit in the Inspiron 15 5000 5579 / i5579. We have no info on battery life, but the notebook’s general specs indicate it can last at least 4 hours on a charge.
The notebook weighs 4.6 lbs and the profile measures 0.8″. Therefore, this is a quite portable laptop among the mainstream 15.6-inchers.

I upgraded 8gb ram to 16gb, 2 slots total on 5579. Beware the slot is difficult to access, not impossible. You should have two people because there are two metal clips that must be simultaneously held open (they secure the ram in place after install). Also, I broke two of the plastic case tabs, didn’t make a difference, but the case itself is easily breakable, made of low quality plastic. I like the machine overall for the price to be honest though. Battery life is not good (Max 3 hrs on battery with mid range settings), but hey it’s a budget 2 in 1 with processing power.

It has an M.2 PCIe slot, according to this setup guide: http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/inspiron-15-5579-2-in-1-laptop_setup%20guide_en-us.pdf
M.2 is listed on the page 17 of the manual. But, it says “One M.2 slot for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo card”.
I’ve searched for compatible 5579 SSD upgrades on Crucial website and they only offer 2.5″ SATA SSDs for it. So, I assume that M.2 slot isn’t meant to be used for M.2 SSDs. But, I don’t own the laptop and can’t tell that for sure.

Can you please help me with this?
1. Can the RAM be upgraded from 8GB to 16GB?
2. For a 256GB SSD configuration – can an additional 2TB/4TB HDD be added separately?
Thanks

RAM upgrade should be possible. I got one that has 16GB and processor i7-8550U does support 16 GB
For additional HDD – suggest checking its user manual. The layout would be same for 256GB and 512GB laptopss

You should be able to replace the 2.5″ drive with any 2.5″ SATA III SSD. I’d recommend a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB for under $160 or WD Blue 1TB for about $25 less. I strongly suggest that you have an experienced technician install the drive, since the contents of your original hard drive must be copied onto the SSD before installing it, and the laptop has to be carefully pried open to avoid breaking the tabs. It is NOT possible to add another drive inside the laptop; however, you can attach a drive (either 2.5″ or M.2 (much more compact)) to a USB port by installing it a relatively inexpensive case.
