The Lenovo Y50 UHD is among the first laptops with an Ultra HD 4K display resolution. Besides the incredibly sharp 15.6-inch screen with a huge pixel count of 3840-by-2160 (for comparison FUll HD is 1920-by-1080), this gaming-oriented notebook packs a serious punch in terms of specs. The display and gaming are powered by the Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M “Maxwell” dedicated video card, while the main computing is done on the powerful quad-core Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor.

Currently, there are three configurations available, namely the 59421856, 59421871, and 59421859. They have storage, system memory, and video memory as the main differences. And, of course, pricing.

Here’s a quick comparison table of the differences between these three models:

Model Video Card RAM Storage Price
59421856 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 8GB Hybrid 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB SSHD $1,299.00
59421871 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB 16GB Hybrid 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB SSHD $1,399.00
59421859 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB 16GB 512GB SSD $1,599.00

Judging from the given specs, pricing is quite reasonable. In our opinion, 8GB of RAM memory and 2GB of video memory on the cheapest 59421856 configuration are sufficient for all computing tasks, including gaming. Users won’t see barely any benefit of larger memories on the more expensive models.

By the way, the Lenovo Y50 UHD configurations are of course more expensive than the corresponding Full HD models. A downside of all models is absence of IPS display technology for wider viewing angles and more precise colors.

The GeForce GTX 860M is among the best laptop-use GPUs on the market, although slower than the 870M/880M and 970M/980M found in the top mobile gaming rigs. It can push completely fluid frame rates in the latest games on Full HD resolution. But, it lacks muscle for flawless gaming on 4K 3840-by-2160 resolution or multi-monitor setups. The i7-4710HQ is among the fastest laptop-use processors. It ensures the CPU won’t be a bottleneck during gaming and is the best solution for demanding stuff like video production or high-res photo editing.

Other important features found on the both Y50 UHD and non-UHD series are AccuType ergonomic keyboard with backlight, JBL-branded stereo speakers, 4 Cell 54 Watt Hour Lithium-Ion batteries providing “up to five hours” of battery life, three USB ports, HDMI out, 802.11AC Wi-Fi, Ethernet LAN, Bluetooth, and a media card reader.
