If you want a modern laptop with excellent performance, a bunch of advanced technologies, and attractive apperance, the aluminum-skinned Toshiba Radius P55W-B5112 might be a good option to consider. The star of the show is its fully-foldable design thanks to a 360-degree rotating hinge. This enables the device to operate in multiple modes, including the standard clamshell laptop, tablet, table-top (opened 180 degrees), and multimedia stands.

The display itself is a high-end one. Alongside multi-touch input, it provides sharp 1080p screen resolution and IPS technology which widens viewing angles. Another way of interacting with the laptop is via the full-size backlit keyboard and touchpad.

For computing, the laptop uses the latest higher-end Intel Core i7-5500U dual-core processor with Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics. It’s not the fastest CPU / GPU configuration in laptops on the market, but they’re powerful enough to provide flawless work on home and office tasks, decent video and photo editing performance, and playing majority of popular game titles (with adjusted graphics quality).

Toshiba has included 8GB of RAM in the Radius P55W-B5112. That’s enough to cover all multitasking scenarios of the home & office user. The hard drive is capacious, too. It’s 1-Terabyte large. The main downside regarding the storage is slow speed of the HDD which rotates at 5,200rpm. Solid state drives are much faster.

The rest of the feature set includes stereo speakers, 720p web-cam, wireless module supporting the latest 802.11AC Wi-Fi standard, Bluetooth, three USB ports, a media card reader, HDMI port for a wired connection to external displays, and Intel Wi-Di technology for wireless video output.

The Toshiba Radius P55W-B5112 can last up to 10 hours on a single charge according to the manufacturer, which is a mind-blowing battery life for a big-screen laptop with a powerful processor. It however looks like the estimation is based on very light use of the system.

The notebook’s profile is 0.8″ high, while the weight is 4.9 pounds. Not bad for a 15.6-inch notebook, but you should keep in mind it’s very heavy for holding in hands as a standard tablet.

the only problem I faced with this laptop is: bubbles show up on screen (after almost 3 years of use), I think this is a common issue with touch screens in laptops in general, I saw some facing the same problem with other brands, by the way those bubbles will show up with time if you are using the laptop in a stuffy place, a hot place, (that’s what I see).
it is good, I like it, it doesn’t get hot, the design is good,

    #One note:
in the first month, I notice that the fan working so hard to cool the CPU, which do make noise, just check which software do make pressure on CPU, in my situation, it was the Antivirus McAfee which came with the laptop, I did remove it and install another one. and voila the noise Gone and CPU always cool.

I bought a used Toshiba Satellite Radius P55W-B5112. This was about 2 yrs. ago and have been very happy and impressed up until just recently. I power it up and it can’t go past the Toshiba Leading Innovation screen. It is out of warranty so I been trying to troubleshoot it myself. I am trying to get to the BIOS using the F2 key but can’t even do that. Sorry just venting although I am open to suggestions

Loaded with nice features: responsive touchscreen, 1080 display, backlit keyboard, new I7 Broadwell cpu, 8 GB RAM and 1T HD. On sale, it was a bargain. I hesitated when I found that the RAM and battery could not be replaced by the owner. These had to be replaced in previous laptops I’ve owned, so I expect these to be a problem in the future. Three troubling areas of my P55W-B5112: 1. The WIFI adapter sometimes will not connect even though the WIFI signal is strong and other computers of mine are working fine off it. 2. The P55W-B5112 will not hold certain desired positions of the display. In the standard laptop position, the display will collapse to a horizontal position if the display angle reaches a certain deviation from vertical. The same happens in audience position. I returned my first P55W-B5112 due to this (and Toshiba support’s advice); the replacement had a stiffer spine but after a month it is failing to hold certain attitudes of the display. I checked out a similar Toshiba model at Best Buy and it did not seem to have this flaw. 3. The touch pad is a little flaky: no scroll bar, you need two fingers to scroll which often results in unintended websites coming up. All in all, I do like this laptop but will replace the hard drive w/ an SSD. So, when I recommend this laptop, it is only for those who are aware of these potential flaws beforehand.

How good is toshiba in performance and lasting? How would you rate it over HP envy 360 series?

    • Danijel Z

I haven’t tested them in real life, but judging from the specs, the Toshiba has a bit better CPU (i7 instead of i5) an higher-capacity battery (manufacturer estimated maximal 10 vs 8.5 hours) than a similarly priced HP Envy X360 configuration: http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/Laptops/hp-envy-x360—15t-touch-laptop-l8s90av-1#!&TabName=specs . If we assume that both are around $800.
As a side note, the Envy x360 from the link I provided is a 2015 model. If you still want to get an HP you should avoid the previous 2014 model because it doesn’t have IPS display technology for wide viewing angles.
