Question
Sheri –
How colorful and crisp for viewing is the screen on the 5502 inspiron i7? I like to take photos and then edit them and enjoy looking at them on my laptop..so how is the color, and crispness and contrast on the screen of this one? Also do you have to pay more to get the fingerprint area to open it and do you suggest getting that? Also what do you think is the longevity of a Dell with one person using it for home use before a hard drive replacement? thanks Sheri

Hi, this is a brand new laptop model so there are no detailed reviews of it yet regarding the screen quality, fingerprint, and build quality. What I found about the display details is that there are two versions of the display on the Inspiron 15 5000 5502:
The weaker one has a 220 nits brightness, 45% NTSC color gamut, and 400 : 1 contrast.
The better one has a 300 nits brightness, 72% NTSC color gamut, and 600 : 1 contrast.
There’s also a 3rd touchscreen version with the same picture quality specs as the weaker one.

Unfortunately, these specs aren’t mentioned anywhere on the product pages on online stores including Dell Store where you can select the notebooks options and purchase it. So before buying you’ll need to check with your seller what screen version is included.
At least we know all of these screen options are IPS type, meaning you won’t have viewing issues at wide angles that are present on the older TN-type panels.

wanted to tell you I chatted with Dell and that screen was 220 nits..I did not want less than 300 nits and may not be able to afford a laptop with 300 have no idea which brands to look at if I could find 15 inch laptop in mid range price…You saved me from making a huge mistake in an inferior screen in color and contrast…as I wanted mine to enjoy my photography with viewing it..Sheri USA

Thanks for the info, Sheri. I think the best way to choose your next laptop for photography is to go to some store and see the laptop’s displays in person. For instance, I use an HP ProBook 470 G5 laptop with a 17.3″ 200-nit 45% NTSC anti-glare screen and I’m pretty much satisfied with it when it comes to my amateur photography needs. Of course, brighter screens with greater color gamut are better if you want the best viewing experience, but as you noticed laptops with them are pricier. These high-quality displays are mostly used in premium-class laptops, especially specialized mobile workstations for designers and photographers.

Hi…once you have the computer, how do I test the display to find out what version it has?
Dan –
Hi, you can download a hardware-checking program like HWinfo and see the display’s model name. Then you can do Google Search for it and see if its detailed specs come up.

For those who want a better display for editing photographs…. have you considered an external monitor? I have been an amateur photographer for years and I wouldn’t consider editing my photographs on a monitor as small as 15″ unless I was traveling. At home I use a 27″ monitor and it does the job quite well. Of course, you also have many more options when buying an external monitor (size, resolution, brightness, contrast, curved, etc.) When using a laptop, I also use an external wireless keyboard and mouse. Much better option than the onboard keyboard and trackpad IMHO.
