Lenovo ThinkPad W550s Mobile Workstation
The Lenovo ThinkPad W550s is a mobile workstation in a thin 15.6-inch laptop form factor. Lenovo has managed to squeeze a professional-class dedicated video card in a 0.9″ thin ruggedized chassis of the W550s, aimed at use with CAD, other engineering programs, 3D animation applications, and professional video and photo editors. The GPU in question is the Nvidia Quadro K620M with 2GB of dedicated video memory. It manages the 15.6″ screen with either 1920×1080 Full HD or 2880×1620 3K resolution, and optional IPS. The video card is backed by an upcoming 5th Generation Intel Core i7 “Broadwell” processor. However, the i7 in the W550s will have two cores instead of four, so this notebook won’t be among the most powerful mobile workstations. On the other hand, it will have a benefit of great portability. The laptop has two SODIMM slots for up to 16GB of system memory and will ship with up to 1-Terabyte of hard drive storage or up to 512GB solid state drive. Thanks to Lenovo’s Power Bridge technology with two batteries and ability to swap one of them without system reboot, the notebook can provide up to 13 hours of continuous work on a single charge. For data input and interaction with the laptop, you can use the full-size keyboard with numeric pad, multitouch trackpad, traditional TrackPoint pointing stick accompanied by physical “mouse” buttons, and optional touchscreen.
