HP Envy m6-1205dx

The HP Envy m6-1205dx is a newly available 15.6-inch configuration of the Envy m-series entertainment-class sleek notebooks, but it doesn’t bring any new hardware changes over the m6-1105dx. The only difference is version of Windows. The m6-1205dx runs newer Windows 8, whereas the older model is powered by Windows 7.

Both laptops feature the AMD A10-4600M quad-core processor with integrated Radeon HD 7660G graphics. The A10-4600M is the top-of-the-line chip for laptops by AMD, but it fairly lags behind Intel’s Core i7 top offers in terms of raw computing muscle. On the positive side, the Radeon HD 7660G is faster than Intel’s integrated graphics solutions and is capable of 3D gaming on lower resolutions and detail settings. Generally, the A10 is a good investment for gamers on a budget, while for those who do advanced stuff, such as high-res video and photo editing, the Intel i7 (and even i5) are better bets. That’s especially true for video editing, because the Intel i-series chips have Quck Sync technology to get that video job done much quicker than with CPUs without it.

As you can see in the chart below, the A10 is slower than the lower-end Intel i3, so “quad-core” badge doesn’t mean much in this case.

HP’s m6-1205dx costs $600. For that price, it also delivers 6GB of RAM, up from usual 4GB which satisfies most users anyway, a generous 750GB hard drive for all your files, DVD/CD writer, luxurious looking aluminum 1-inch thin chassis with brushed silver finish, backlight keyboard for easy typing in a darkened room, and a standard set of connectivity and networking features listed in the specs sheet below. Let’s just mention three USBs, HDMI video output, and Wi-Fi as the most important ones and a lack of Bluetooth as an omission.

For better CPU performance, for $670 you can have the m6-1225dx with an Intel Core i5 chip.
