HP 15-bs212wm Cheap 15.6″ Laptop (Intel Celeron N4000, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Jet Black)

Compare Specs

The HP 15-bs212wm is an affordable 15.6-inch Windows 10 laptop model sold by Walmart. It’s usually priced at below $300.

The HP 15-bs212wm features the basic HD 1366-by-768 display resolution, so the screen lacks sharpness of the Full HD or better panels. Also, it is a TN type display, meaning narrower viewing angles than with the IPS screens.

Inside its “jet black” plastic chassis with a full-size non-backlit keyboard, the 15-bs212wm packs entry-level internal components. The included Intel Celeron N4000 dual-core processor is good only for the non-demanding everyday computing tasks like web browsing, work in Microsoft Office applications, media playback, and some light Angry Birds-type games. HP has provided 4GB of RAM, which is on the smaller side. However, if you don’t run many programs simultaneously 4GB can be sufficient. As for storing your data, the included 500GB hard drive is a very basic storage device, without huge storage space and with slow data reading and writing speeds. A standard hard drive size on today’s laptop market is 1-Terabyte, double the size of 500GB. Also SSD as a newer form of storage devices found in pricier laptops provides much faster speeds than HDD’s and therefore smoother computing experience. This notebook model has a built-in DVD writer.

The battery of the HP 15-bs212wm has a mediocre capacity of 31 WHr. But, the HP support team on the laptop’s product page on Walmart.com claims the battery life is “up to 7 hours”.

Here are the specs of the HP 15-bs212wm with descriptions of its features. For comparison against other laptops, you can use the "Compare Specs" button.

  3. 1 out of 5 Slow as I have ever seen

    Keith P

I have used this model for over a year now and it has been the slowest system I have ever used. From day one it would take 4-5 min to completely boot. Only use it to access my banking portal. No picture editing, no movies, no You Tube, nothing but doing my banking.
I have consistent 400+ MPS internet connection that I verify with other systems I have in my home (as tested using speedtest.xfinity.com). The best speed this laptop has been able to give is just over 50 MPS.

You seem to have gotten a defective system. They are not the fastest systems in the world, its using a Celeron N4000, but it is definitely not supposed to be that slow. Also what web browser are you using? That has a lot to do with how this laptop performs too. Edge is terrible on any system it’s on, its absolutely horrendous on this particular systems. I have a few suggestions for you that may help.
      1. Clear the cache on W10 (easy to look up instructions for that)
      2. Try switching to Chrome or Firefox for your browser and see if that helps
      3. If neither of those two help, try reinstalling Windows. You can do that in many ways, easiest is through your settings. You can also look up easy to follow instructions for this as well.

I really hope this helps. If it does, come check me out on facebook. If it doesn’t maybe still come check me out on facebook and we can see what we can do from there. Thanks for your time.

I agree w/ the OP, the real shortcoming of this laptop is the fact it only comes w/ 4GB of RAM requiring a ton of memory swap usage on the HDD esp. running on Windows 10.. I added an extra 4 GB of RAM to it and installed Linux Mint and it became significantly quicker.

  5. 5 out of 5 Way Better Than It Should Be

    David

I bought this at Walmart expecting it to be junk. Two years later, after editing thousands of photos in Photoshop, and thousands of documents and PDF documents, and countless hours watching HD videos without glitches, I am dumbfounded at how fast, and reliable this laptop is.

    • David C. Egeland

I have had exactly the same experience with the one I bought used (about a year old at that time). CPU-ID shows my Celeron N4000 running both cores at 2,616MHz at times, 2,486MHz almost continuously, while the retail stock frequency is 1.1GHz! No hangs at all, unless you get ridiculous games or try to do more than most people are mentally capable of doing to begin with (lol!). All-in-all, I recommend this very affordable model–really a high-end netbook instead of a low-end notebook–for high school and college students, as well as those planning on internet-surfing mostly and other general personal computing besides. So, as long as you don’t want to play those crazy, high-end games out there today, this unit should serve most “normal” folks just fine. . .as a starter unit, at the very least.

Can we use Ssd drive in this laptop

  6. Steve Green

This for my wife. Neither of us ever used a laptop. How well does this play DVD’s? What’s it’s operating system? Will it accept thumb-drives with 8 or 16 memory for music playback? Tia, folks!

    • David C. Egeland

      Good and yes, yes, yes.

  7. JG

Can it upgrade from 4gb to 8gb?

    • joshshp

Did u ever find this out

    • David C. Egeland

Yes, you need an 8GB RAM stick, as there are 2 memory slots, supposedly, but only one has the connection where it should be.

I bought a intel-celeron N4000 last week to use as a writing tool for some short stories. After a little while it starts going to other user sites. Is there a manual I can get?

Hi May I Ask If This Laptop Works With Pen-Touch?

    • Danijel Z

You can use only the simple capacitive pens, without features like pressure sensitivity. The laptop doesn’t support active digitizer pens like those on the Microsoft Surface and other devices with pressure sensitivity and other advanced stuff.

    • David C. Egeland

The fingerpad is exceptionally responsive, with no stick or lag at all.

    • Steve

Mine is slower than s _ _ _ . I wonder if it is because I’m running the pay version of McAfee? Has anyone had this problem?

    • Ken

A family member of mine has this model and its slow as molasses. The CPU and Disk usage is always throttling at 100%. Many people have suggested uninstalling McAfee as its considered bloatware and it does bog down your system, but with this specific model it doesn’t help at all. The hardware as mentioned in the article is just enough for webpage viewing…even opening the browser takes upwards 3-5 to open and another 1-2 minutes for the homepage to load.

    • Steve

I own this Laptop and you are right it is slow…….or at least it was. I maxed out the RAM memory to 8 Gb. I also added a 500 Gb SSD in place of the standard 500 Gb hard drive. Now it motors along quite nicely! I bought the memory from memorystock.com and the hard drive from Crucial. You will need to buy an interface from Crucial so yo can clone the hard drive. I’m very pleased with the laptops performance…..Now!
