Toshiba Satellite C55-A5105
Wondering what’s the cheapest full-size Windows laptop on the market currently? It’s the Toshiba Satellite C55-A5105 with the entry Intel Celeron N2820 dual-core processor with ~1,050 PassMark CPU test points. This 15.6-incher cost less than already ultra-affordable C55D-A5120 from the same Satellite C-series and with a faster AMD main chip (~1.750 in PassMark) or Acer E1-510-2500 with the same Celeron CPU.
Intel’s N2820 isn’t fast by any stretch of imagination, but you will be able to browse the web and edit Office documents on it without too much lag. In addition, the CPU fully supports 1080p videos, so you will not experience any lag when playing them, while included 4GB of RAM ensures no multitasking problems due to low amount of memory. The hard drive has a capacity of 500GB, which is not big, but it is a usual HDD size among budget and mid-range laptops. Also, the screen resolution is ordinary: 1,366×768 pixels, as same as the networking and connectivity feature set containing three USBs, HDMI and VGA outputs, media card reader, Wi-Fi wireless, and Ethernet LAN. The laptop does have a DVD burner and it comes with stereo speakers and web camera built-in.
Outwardly, the C55 is an utilitarian looking machine, which might be boring to some users, but it’s easy to keep it clean and isn’t too bulky, with profile measuring 1.3 and weight of 5.3 pounds. The keyboard has numeric pad, convenient for entering large amounts of numbers, while the trackpad has physical click buttons instead of integrated which is a plus if you prefer tactile feedback over design simplicity.
Overall, the C55-A5105 will suite computing needs of the average user, but if you have $30 more to spend on your new laptop, we advise you to go for the C55D-A5120 because speed boost is worth the money.

Thanks for the input @Danijel Z, I was just looking into that same thing. I believe I’ll be going with the A5120.

Can anyone tell me if this will be a good machine for running constant transactions through a web browser? I need to set up some stations that will be running a web based box office to process cash and credit card transactions. (Assuming a solid internet connection will be in place)

If the transactions are done on the server’s side, I think this machine will work just fine. Web apps, especially those that are not based on Java, generally don’t require excellent hardware. But keep in mind that the CPU inside this Toshiba is among the slowest on the market. I would personally pick this one instead: http://laptoping.com/specs/product/toshiba-satellite-c55d-a5120/ . It has the same price, but faster CPU.

@tom: Can you tell us how long the battery lasts?

4 out of 5

No complaints except some lagging in Chrome. I like having all sites I use opened always. task manager shows around 2.5 gb usage out of 3.9. I guess adding more ram won’t help. CPU hits around 40 per cent when a page loads.

Toshiba has Windows 7 drivers listed for this laptop but the BIOS limitations make it to where you cannot install it. I tried numerous different methods to attempt to get windows 7 on this laptop and failed at all of them.

@Babak: I’m using Office H&S on daily basis on the Intel Bay Trail processor. No glitches in Word, Excel and other Office apps. Actually, I run it on a tablet with Atom Bay Trail CPU (Word text with images, Excel with charts), but it has very similar performance to the CPU used in this laptop.

I would like to buy this one but I’m not sure if it’s good for Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013? Mostly Word and Excel.

Are there Windows 7 drivers for this laptop included on a DVD in the package? Or online somewhere?

@boro These games will run but you’ll have to scale back the graphics to minimum. For reference check out on Youtube any of the game tests of the Intel “Bay Trail” processors and the C55-A5105 will run these games at similar frame rates.
