Acer Aspire M5-583P-9688 Thin 15.6″ Touch i7 Laptop with 1TB HDD

The $700-dollar Acer Aspire M5-583P-9688 is a thin-class 15.6-inch notebook PC with touchscreen input support, a fast Intel Core i7-4500U dual-core processor with decent Intel HD 4400 integrated graphics, a spacious 1-Terabyte hard disk drive, and equally generous 8GB of main system memory.

Acer Aspire M5-583P-9688 Front

All components are features are encased in a silver brushed aluminum shell, which combined with the 0.9″ slim profile and chiclet (non-backlit) keyboard delivers an exceptionally elegant look.  It’s interesting to note this model has ports located on the rear side of the keyboard deck, instead of normally left and right sides. The Acer M5-583P-9688 weighs 5.3 pounds, so despite its thinness it’s not a great travel companion.

On the positive side, it provides standard-size display diagonal of 15.6 inches allowing you to communicate with Windows 8, applications, and games via 10-point touch input support. As a downfall, the screen resolution is mediocre 1,366-by-768 pixels. It’s an acceptable resolution for cheap laptops, but certainly disappointing for an $800-dollar machine.

Overall, the Acer Aspire M5-583P-9688 has a realistic price. The i7 processor, and large HDD and RAM capacities justify the relatively high price tag and they appear to be the main selling points besides the touchscreen display and aluminum chassis. If you want to go full HD and have a backlit keyboard alongside the core components of this laptop, you can check out the Dell Inspiron I15RV-1952BLK for a higher price of $870. Another alternative is the HP Envy TouchSmart m6-k025dx for $780. It has a full HD screen and backlight keyboard keys, but the Intel Core i5-4200U is slower and 750GB HDD capacity is lower. During the Black Friday sales at Best Buy, the HP will cost only $600, so if you manage to grab one you’ll get the best bang for the buck.

  3. Where is the microphone??? Do I attach my own microphone?? When I do, it doesn’t give me the option to select microphone (e.g. speaker, headset, earphones).

    • This model has a built-in mic, probably near the camera on the display bezel. Does Control Panel / Device Manager show audio drivers installed properly? If not, you should install / update them and try again to use your mic.

  4. Great laptop!!! I agree totally with CHRS and Carlito.
I own one and I bought a second one for my wife. Runs silent and cool, plenty of performance, great graphics and sound. We both love our laptops. Excellent buy, very good finished product. High quality. Acer Aspire M5-583P-9688

I recommend it to every one!

  5. I suppose it’s to conserve battery power. You can turn the backlighting back on, though, by holding the function key down and pressing F9. This is the on/off switch.

  6. I own this laptop, model Acer Aspire M5-583P-9688. I agree with Chris above, the review is essentially of another model, hence should be corrected as it is misleading. I had a Toshiba, Dell, and Asus but returned them as they were cheaply made. This laptop is a joy to use, feels very well built, GREAT sound system, long battery life, quick, responsive, cool running, great display… all for $600 (Acer refurbished).
I would most definitely recommend this model to anyone. 10/10

  7. Hi, I actually own this laptop. As I read your review, I noticed some things you have wrong. First of all, the keyboard IS backlit. It also has a USB port on the left, and right side, and one on the back side. Not only that, but the HD graphics is up to 1824MB not 4. Last but not least, however heavy it may be, it can be carried easily and takes almost no effort to carry it with even one hand. Maybe you were reviewing another laptop, because I have the Acer M5-583P-9688.

  8. Hi, Thanks for this article… I need to know what is the model of the motherboard, the specific socket…
    Thanks

    • I don’t know the specific model of the mobo, but it’s for sure a FCBGA1168 socket motherboard. If you own the laptop, HWINFO Windows app will display all specifics of the system, including the motherboard model.
