The Samsung NP700Z3A-S01US is one of the Series 7 Chronos thin-bezel aluminum laptops, unveiled back in September.
The NP700Z3A-S01US is the smallest model, with a 14-inch 1600×900 anti-glare 300 nits bright display, whereas the lager have 15″ and 15.6″ screens. Thanks to their thin display bezels, Chronos notebooks have screens packed into smaller than standard cases, so the 14-incher has dimensions of a 13.3-inch laptop – 12.80″ x 8.90″ x 0.93″. Yes, the notebook is less than one inch thin. It weighs 4.3 pounds.
The offered configuration includes th dual-core Intel Core i5-2430M 2.4GHz processor with a standard voltage, AMD Radeon HD 6490M dedicate video card with 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM, as well as 6GB of RAM. There’s a 750GB hard disk coupled with an 8GB solid state drive to deliver a 2-second system wake up from stand by mode and faster boot times.
Although the model we saw at IFA had a slot-load DVD burner, the Samsung NP700Z3A-S01US apparently doesn’t have one, according to the specifications. Also, the model is lacking keyboard backlight, which is present in some Chronos 7 configurations. The keyboard is isle style and the multi-touch trackpad is a larger one. The webcam has a 1.3MP sensor and the stereo speakers have 2×1.5 Watts of power.
Samsung has specified that the estimated battery life with the standard 8-cell unit is nine hours. The company says the battery is made for the long haul, retaining “80% of the original battery capacity for up to 1,500 charges.”
Ports and slots selection on the NP700Z3A Chronos includes a USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 connector, HDMI, and a 4-in-1 media card reader, while for networking and wireless connectivity there are 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and an Ethernet LAN port.
The Samsung NP700Z3A-S01US has a price tag of $1,099. It’s more expensive than its competitors – the Gateway ID starting at $699, Asus U46SV-DH51 for $879, and $999 Dell XPS 14z. But, the Samsung is the only thin-bezel 14-incher with a 1600×900 screen and has the largerst HDD among these plus an 8GB SSD. Others have 1366×768 panels. However, we would like to see a lower price for the NP700Z3A, because it has no optical drive, which is present in its cheaper competitors.
