The HP Envy m7-n101dx / m7-n011dx is one of the latest models in the Envy premium-class notebook lineup. It’s characterized by a large 17.3-inch high-resolution touchscreen, fast computing performance, and luxury-looking chassis.

The m7-n101dx (with Windows 10) / m7-n011dx (with Windows 8.1) provides a sharp picture and wide viewing angles thanks to the Full HD screen with IPS technology. Alongside the multi-touch screen, you can interact with programs and Windows via a full-size keyboard with backlight and numeric pad, and a spacious trackpad with integrated buttons. Computing is powered by the 5th Generation Intel Core i7-5500U dual-core processor, while for graphics processing the laptop uses the latest Nvidia GeForce GT 940M dedicated video card. It delivers similar gaming performance with the GT 840M we reviewed. The notebook has a great multitasking potential provided by 16GB of system memory, and ample of hard drive space – 1 Terabyte – for storing movies, music, and other files. Unfortunately, the HDD spins at common but slow 5,400 rpm speed, which is the weakest point of the system.

Other important specs of the Envy m7-n101dx / m7-n011dx include a built-in DVD burner drive, Bang & Olufsen-branded quad speaker system accompanied by a subwoofer for richer sound, a 720p web camera, and an admirable networking and connectivity feature set. The laptop has 802.11AC and Bluetooth wireless interfaces, Ethernet LAN network port, four USB 3.0 ports, HDMI video output, a media card reader, and a combo microphone / headphone audio connector.

All components are wrapped in an attractive chassis with a sleek 1.2″ profile. The dark gray palmrest area has a brushed metal appearance, but we don’t know if its aluminum or just textured plastics. The lid has a plain silver-colored finish.

The laptop has a hefty weight of 7 pounds, so it is rather a desktop PC replacement than a travel companion.

Although the battery capacity of 41 WHr isn’t a great one, especially for a laptop with a large power-hungry touch display, the Envy m7-n011dx is claimed to provide “up to 6.75 hours” run time on a single charge.

This machine is fine if you just want something to carry from room to room around the house. It’s downright terrible for even light travel.

The outside of the machine seems nice in a showroom, but once you’ve had a few hours to handle the machine, you quickly realize how chintzy it is. I have the impression that there’s just a thin aluminium veneer on top of a plastic body and frankly, it’d look and feel better if they would just stick to the high-gloss plastic body that their older laptops had.

I went to swap the HDD with an SDD and found it impossible to get to the drive.

Two screws randomly just fell out of the bottom (albeit, after I had attempted to swap drives).

I took it on a quick jaunt to a coffee shop and when I got home and fired up the laptop I discovered that the top right corner of the trackpad got stuck under the top bezel. This caused the mouse to go crazy; jiggling with constant left and right clicking which ended up creating new folders on the desktop. I ended up using a knife to pop the trackpad back in place, flush with the bezel.

I got mine on-sale for ~$990. I returned it and bought an on-sale Lenovo that’s more powerful (same cpu, same ram capacity, better graphics, faster ram) for $860. The build quality is far, far superior to the HP.

      Which Lenovo model specifically?

    The Negative about this laptop:
    1. Not for gaming. Low end graphics & slow hard drive. 16 gigs of fast memory, but accessing virtual memory will bog down games.
    2. A large platform with wasted interior space. Room for a second HD/SSD bay, but none there. Case EXTREMELY difficult to open, so replacing HD or memory is risky.
    3. Power hungry display and a small battery.
    4. HDMI, but not remote wireless screen, means you need to cable-up to a TV.

This is a nice multimedia laptop when used with its display only, and plugged in. Price for a laptop with all its drawbacks is fair.
