The Dell Inspiron I5558-5003BLK / I5558-2571BLK is one of the models from the PC maker’s mid-range Inspiron 15 5000 5558 series. The I5558-5003BLK / I5558-2571BLK is a very good buying choice, since it offers a fast Intel Core i7 processor and a large 1-Terabyte hard drive for just $500 at the time of this writing. In fact, it’s probably the cheapest notebook with these specs.

The only difference between the 5003BLK and 2571BLK is the operating system. The first one runs the latest Windows 10, while the later comes pre-loaded with Windows 8.1, with free upgrade rights to Win 10. Since the Windows 10-based version can be found at Best Buy for $500 and the latter one is a bit more expensive, the I5558-5003BLK is clearly a better buying choice.

The included Core i7 isn’t one of the quad-core chips, which are the fastest on the notebook market. The laptop features the dual-core i7-5500U, which is still a higher-end processor with excellent performance for both the daily chores and intensive tasks. The CPU has the basic Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics and is accompanied by 6GB of RAM memory, with enough multitasking headroom for almost any computing scenario. The 1TB hard drive is quite spacious, but as a downside it has slow performance. It’s a traditional HDD at 5,400 rpm. Thankfully, both system memory and hard drive are user-replaceable, so you can have up to 16GB of RAM using dual memory slots and faster solid state drive storage instead of the HDD.

The screen specs are mediocre. Its resolution is 1366-by-768 pixels instead of much sharper 1920×1080 Full HD which is available on select Dell 5558 configurations. Also, touchscreen functionality and wide viewing angle IPS technology are missing.

Dell Inspiron I5558-5003BLK / I5558-2571BLK 2

The rest of the specs sheet includes all necessary features an average laptop user might need. The laptop sports a keyboard with numeric-pad, spacious trackpad, built-in DVD burner, stereo speaker system, a 720p camera, Wi-Fi wireless connection supporting the latest 802.11AC standard, Bluetooth, Ethernet LAN connector, Bluetooth, HDMI video output port, three USB ports, and a media card reader.

As opposed to some 5558 models with a silver or white screen lid, the Dell Inspiron I5558-5003BLK / I5558-2571BLK is all black. The lid is made of aluminum, while the rest of the notebook is made of plastics.

There’s no info on battery life for this particular model, but Dell says the battery life on the 5558 series can generally last “up to four hours”.

The laptop weighs in at 5.3 pounds and is 0.9″ thick.

    Dan

I have one and I am pleased with the performance and price. Screen and graphics are low as well as battery life (about 2 hrs on high performance) but that’s expected with a low price point.

Question: Is the RAM 204 pin or 240 pin (SO-DIMM or DIMMs) for upgrade?

    • sany

      It’s 204-pin SO-DIMM.
