The cheapest full-size notebook in Walmart’s 2015 Black Friday ad is an “HP 15.6″ laptop” for $199. On Walmart.com, the laptop is listed under title HP Black 15.6″ 15-f209wm Laptop PC with Intel Celeron N2840 Processor, 4GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive and Windows 10 Home. The title pretty much explains characteristics of this budget notebook. It should be further noted that it also has a built-in DVD burner as an important fact.

HP 15.6 Laptop for $199 from Walmart Black Friday 2015 Ad - HP Black 15-f209wm Laptop PC with Intel Celeron N2840 Processor, 4GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive and Windows 10 Home

The Intel Celeron N2840 dual-core processor we reviewed some time ago is an entry-level chip. When paired with 4GB of RAM, the N2840 can be a decent solution for home and office tasks of the average user, multimedia consumption, some casual low-end gaming, and moderate multitasking. The included 500GB hard drive spinning at 5,400rpm is an typical and relatively slow budget notebook HDD. Considering the Black Friday price / performance ratio, the 199-dollar HP 15-f209wm laptop is relatively a good deal. However, it’s worth noting that a very similar notebook was on Black Friday sale last year for only $159.

As for the word “black” in the name, it doesn’t mean the 15-f209wm is a part of some special black edition notebook series. It simply describes the color of the chassis. Walmart usually highlights casing colors in the titles on notebook product pages. This model actually belongs to the HP 15 series, which is a budget one. Therefore, it’s a simple machine without premium materials or excessive bells and whistles. Among potentially useful features missing on this configuration, the important one is touchscreen support.

The 15-f209wm isn’t an ugly notebook. On contrary, it has a very slim profile of 0.9″ so it has a kind of sleek appearance. The casing overall looks utilitarian and unobtrusive with its matte black finish and simple shape without unnecessary curves and elements.

Alongside the aforementioned core specs, worth attention are the screen resolution of 1366×768 pixels, a full-size keyboard with numeric pad, and trackpad with mechanical click buttons which is usually a better solution than the integrated ones. The laptop has stereo speakers, a VGA-quality webcam, and a decent selection of connectivity features. The 15-f209wm has three US ports, HDMI output for hooking up to monitors and TVs, and a multi-in-one media card reader.

Hewlett-Packard hasn’t provided info on battery life but the 3-cell batteries in the HP 15 series laptops can usually provide around 4 hours or power autonomy.

The discounted offer event will be live on Thursday, November 26th 6PM and available while supplies last. It isn’t marked as an “in store only” deal, so it’s safe to assume you will be able to grab it online.

tell me something .. if i would want to buy this laptop only for work needs..

would it be a smart buy..

and why or why not ??

    • Danijel Z

This laptop has one of the slowest processors on the market. It can run apps like Word or Excel fine, but don’t expect as seamless experience as with faster mainstream CPUs like the Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7. Performance will be very similar (or the same) to one described in this review: http://laptoping.com/cpus/product/intel-celeron-n2830-n2840-n2820-specs-benchmark-reviews/

Otherwise, this budget-class model doesn’t lag behind the competition in other areas.

  2. Terry Wagner

    Hi
I recently purchase this model and I am not liking it, yes it is newer but it has to stay plugged in or it freezes up, basically it doesn’t stay charged when unplugged. Please advise, may have to return it. Thank you

Is this laptop good enough to carry 3dmax, autocadm, revit, lumion and sketch up? ‘coz as what I have read above it doesn’t have a video card and a fast processor, can I still use those programs even without it? Thank you 🙂

    • Danijel Z

I did a search for “[your program] minimum system requirements” and found that the laptop meets 3D Max and AutoCad system requirements. Revit is questionable, since they list Intel Pentium or better CPU with SSE2 technology. The Celeron inside this laptop supports SSE2, so it will be maybe run Revit. Lumion and Sketch Up have much higher minimum system requirements than this laptop’s specs.

i am looking for a gaming laptop, and I’m not sure if i want to get this one. Do you think think this can be a good laptop for gaming?

    • Danijel Z

The HP 15-f209wm isn’t a gaming laptop and it can’t be recommended for gaming, primarily because it has no dedicated video card nor a fast enough processor. However, you can play some light games on it on low graphics settings, such as Legaue of Legends, Minecraft, or Counter Strike. Take a look at gameplays in the review of the Intel Celeron N2830/N2840 CPU which is used in the 15-f209wm: http://laptoping.com/cpus/product/intel-celeron-n2830-n2840-n2820-specs-benchmark-reviews/

Is the Ram and Hard Drive Upgradeable and if so, to what max? Thanks

    • Danijel Z

According to the maintenance guide for this laptop, RAM is easily upgradeable, since there’s service door on the bottom of the notebook’s body. The 15-f209wm has a single SODIMM memory slot, so you can take out the included 4GB module and put in an 8GB one instead, so you can have up to 8GB. HDD replacement is possible but you’ll have to remove many parts to access the drive, plus, it isn’t a self-repair part, meaning you could void your warranty if you replace it yourself.

  6. Cheryl

This says it has a built in DVD burner, however i don’t see anywhere for DVD’s to go?? I may be completely computer dyslexic….. Also, I am only looking for a laptop for my daughter for Netflix and things like that; think this is a good idea?

    • Danijel Z

The specs sheet of the 15-f209wm on Walmart.com lists a ” SuperMulti DVD Burner ” drive as one of the features. If you’re referring to the right-profile image on their product page, the DVD drive is indeed missing. But, I assume they just put a generic image of the HP 15 series with no DVD.

Generally, this laptop is a low-end one, but basic tasks like Netflix should work fine.

Just started using the laptop. Yeah the price was good…but i have some issues. There is only an audio jack….the windows 8 kinda controls you. And the sound quality of my music compared to my old Samsung Laptop is just day and night. I honestly do not favor this model. It is visually appealing….but that’s it. I dislike this model entirely. I am a digital artist and been using my samsung since graduation. That thing has lasted me 4 long years and still works. I was just wanting to upgrade….but my expections where kinda killed after 4 days of using this device….big no no for me.

Bought $159 computer at wal-mart last night. Never offered the two year warranty plan. Cashier said could not get one? Is that true?

  9. Danijel Z

@Marin: The HP 15-f004wm will do web browsing and Netflix smoothly. Just don’t use too many browser tabs opened at the same time.

  10. Marin

Planning to get this for browsing in Chrome and Netflix videos via Windows 8 app. Is the HP 15-f004wm good for that?

  11. Jill B.

@Danijel: Great, thanks! I’m going to give the HP a shot. If it doesn’t work out, I can always save and get an i3 or an AMD A8 later on.

  12. Danijel Z

@Jill B: Thank you. I had been using an Acer laptop with the same specs as the $159 HP for a while and can tell you I was satisfied with overall performance for the day-to-day tasks. Among the things you mentioned, moderate to heavy surfing appears to be the most demanding one. I have tested the laptop with up to five browser tabs opened and there were no slowdowns, a pretty much smooth experience. Also, 1080p YouTube videos ran without a glitch.

You can see what work on the Intel Celeron N2830 processor with 4GB RAM looks like in the first video on this page:

@AM: This deal will be available in Walmart stores on 11/27/14 8PM, while supplies last.

  14. Jill B.

First of all, Danijel Z, I wanted to tell you that you did a fantastic job with this website and it has helped me more than any other. Thank you! Because I’m on a very tight budget I’m considering getting the HP $159 deal, myself. My question is this: can I get away with this laptop for moderate to heavy online surfing/ research, shopping, Facebook, Youtube, light Word and Excel? Thanks!

  15. AM

Where can I get this? Walmart site lists this at 249

    Please share!

  16. Danijel Z

@brittany c: In that case, the Dell I posted in my last comment is the best choice so far. If you don’t manage to get it on Black Friday, you should look for laptops with Intel Core i3 or AMD A8 processors. They regularly cost only a little bit more than $300, but offer much better speed for photo editing than the Intel Celeron processors you can usually find in the cheapest laptops.

  17. brittany c

I’m trying not to go over $300! Thanks

  18. Danijel Z

@ brittany c: I occasionally do photo editing on a laptop which is very similar to the $159 HP. On this page you can find out more about its performance: http://laptoping.com/intel-celeron-n2830-n2820-specs-benchmark.html (both laptops have the same CPU and therefore perform very similar). In short, I have no issues with lower-resolution photos and work with them is decently smooth. The problem I encounter is quite long saving time in Nikon’s RAW photo converter, when I finish editing of a RAW file and save it as a high-quality jpeg. I edit large 4000-something-by-3000-something pixel images taken with a DSLR. So, you will be able to use the laptop for photography, but it certainly isn’t among good solutions if you compare it to other available laptops. If you’re on a tight budget, this one offers good performance for the money and is still cheap ($300 on Black Friday at Best Buy): http://laptoping.com/specs/product/dell-inspiron-i35425000bk/

If you can tell me your upper budget limit, maybe I can find something better…

  19. brittany c

I happened upon your black Friday computer deal page yesterday. I am wanting to get more into photography and am wondering if this would be a good starter computer? If not, what would you recommend for someone on a budget? Thanks!

  20. marly-k

it says in store only when you click on the deal like on the picture in ad on Walmart.com.

    • Danijel Z

I saw that too, but not sure if it’s correct. The links show “in store only” even for online-only deals advertised as “only on Walmart.com”… On the other hand, on the page in the catalog near the $249 HP laptop they clearly say “in store only” so there’s no doubt about the $249 HP. On the page of the $159 HP they don’t state anything similar, so I assume it’s not “in store only”. But, it’s best to contact Walmart if you can and get the info.
