The ASUS Eee PC, the company’s low-cost laptop computer, is now available for preorder through the AllASUS website. The retailer will start shipping these 7-inch Intel-based laptops in early October.
There are three offered configurations of the 1.96-pound Eee PC, which starts at $259.99. For that price, you can get the Eee PC 700 model in black color. It has 256MB of system memory and 2GB of embedded Flash memory storage. The $299.00 Eee PC 700 model also features a 256MB RAM, and 2GB of storage, but, in addition, it has a built-in 0.3 megapixel web camera. The best equipped is the ASUS Eee PC 701 for $399.99, which incorporates 512MB of memory, 4GB of storage, and a webcam. The $299.00 and $399.99 Eee PCs provide black and white color options and come with a carry bag.
The exact processor and chipset used in these affordable notebooks are not known, since the AllASUS product pages only say that the Eee PCs are based on “Intel mobile CPU & chipset”. However, the CitrusMicro website has published the official Eee PC specifications sheet, which list an Intel Celeron M processor in all of the three configurations.
The notebook’s 7″ display is managed by an Intel’s integrated graphics chip and provides 800×480 screen resolution. A 4-cell battery, claimed to provide 3 hours of run time, powers the three offered models. Other features include Ethernet LAN and 802.11b/g wireless connections, built-in stereo speakers and microphone, a MMC/SC card reader, three USB 2.0 Ports, and VGA and audio outputs.
The Asus EEE PC has a Linux-based user interface preinstalled. This laptop is Windows XP compatible and comes with XP drivers.
