Acer Angel Sleekbook Silver 11.6″ V5-122P-0408 Touch Laptop – $199 Walmart Black Friday Deal
One of Walmart’s 2014 Black Friday laptop offers is a model listed as “Acer V5 Angel Touchscreen Laptop” with a $199 price tag. The retailer hasn’t provided a detailed specifications sheet nor model name of the machine, so getting to know more about the deal isn’t straightforward. Features listed in the Black Friday ad are 11.6-inch display diagonal, an AMD A4 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. Judging from the image, the mini notebook in question is a V5-122P series model.
UPDATE: The exact model is the one listed under “Acer Sleekbook Silver 11.6″ V5-122P-0408 Touch Laptop PC with AMD A4-1250 Processor” at Walmart.
Since the V5-122P-0408 belongs to the Aspire V5-122P series, we are dealing with a budget-class product. The AMD A4 CPU used in the V5 notebooks is the A4-1250 dual core with Radeon HD 8210 integrated graphics. The processor runs at only 1GHz and is one of the weakest notebook-use parts on the market. PassMark test results confirm that claim, since the chip scores only around 600 benchmark points. For comparison’s sake, the Intel Celeron and Atom processors found in the affordable Windows laptops and tablets score 1,000 points and up. While we are at the competition, lets mention some good alternatives: the Asus X200MA with an Intel Celeron, similar other specs, and a regular price tag of around $250, Staple’s Asus X205TA-RHATMN0 100-dollar Black Friday non-touch laptop with a Celeron, and 200-dollar HP Stream 11 with the same CPU and a free Office 365 1-year subscription. You can find all good Black Friday laptop deals here.
In the real world use, this means the A4-1250 will handle at an adequate speed only the most basic computing tasks, like web surfing with a few browser tabs opened or text editing. On the positive side, AMD’s chips traditionally handle video playback well, thanks to good hardware-based decoding technology. 1080p videos will run smoothly on this computer, without overloading the CPU.
However, the display of the V5-122P-0408 doesn’t support 1080p resolution. It’s a 720p 1366-by-768 panel, expected for a low-cost machine. The screen enables 10-point multitouch input.
Some of the V5 series models have a backlit keyboard, but the Acer Sleekbook Silver 11.6″ V5-122P-0408 doesn’t. The trackpad is made of a single piece of plastics and incorporates click buttons in the surface.
This light and compact plastic-cladded machine with a weight of 3 pounds and .8″ profile has no built-in optical drive. However, it is known the Acer V5 11.6″ comes with built-in stereo speakers, 720p webcam, 802.11n wireless, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a media card reader. Instead of a standard video output port such as HDMI or VGA, the laptop has a proprietary jack and comes with an adapter cable with VGA interface on the output end.
The claimed battery life is only up to 3.5 hours, according to specs of the Acer V5-122P.
Black Friday sales of the Acer V5 Angel V5-122P-0408 (word angel probably describes its light chassis color) will begin on Thursday November 27th, 8PM.

@Danielle: This model has no DVD drive built-in. You can buy a USB external one. They’re quite cheap these days, less than $20.

Looks like I can get the RCLT208 for $199 would that be a better deal than the acer?

@Heidi: Since the Acer V5 is a touchscreen laptop and has larger system memory and hard drive capacities, I think it is a better choice. True, the AMD A4 CPU inside the Acer is quite sluggish and slower than the Intel Celeron CPU in the HP, but Acer will still be able to get the basic job done, like web browsing without many tabs opened, text editing, movie playback and such.
The main reason I give advantage to the Acer V5 over the HP Stream 11 is because the HP has really small storage space of 32GB, so you can install only a small number of apps and programs on it. A free 1y Office 365 is clearly an advantage of the Stream series, but I don’t know if it’s a matter of concern for you.
If a bit higher price is an option for you, this one will be better than both. It has a Celeron, 4GB of RAM, 500GB HDD and touchscreen:

What is is a better deal for price & quality the HP 11.6″ Stream Laptop PC with Intel Celeron Processor, 2 GB memory, 32 GB hard drive, windows 8.1 and office 365 or the Acer V5 Angel Touchscreen Laptop both are on sale Black Friday for $199?

@ebrown: It has a Converter port and should come with a Converter port to VGA adapter cable. However, the cable isn’t listed in the What’s in the Box part of the “Sleekbook Silver 11.6″ V5-122P-0408 Touch Laptop” product page, so can’t tell for sure if you get one. The V5 11.6-inch series usually come with the cable. It’s best to contact Walmart directly and ask about it.
By the way, the Converter port is Acer’s proprietary port and isn’t a DisplayPort as many believe.

I think it’s too sluggish. This one has no touchscreen but has acceptable processor, cost only 15 bucks more and can be bought right now:
http://laptoping.com/specs/product/acer-aspire-e3-111-c0wa/ On the downside, it has only 2GB RAM.
If you really need touchscreen, take a lok at this one for $230, shipping now:
http://laptoping.com/specs/product/asus-x200ma-bcl0705z/ It has 4GB RAM.
