Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5558 Mid-Tier 15.6″ Laptop
The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5558, oftentimes listed as i5558 on online stores, is a conventional mid-range laptop PC. Besides the standard-size 15.6-inch display, the Inspiron 5558 packs Intel’s 5th Generation Core-series processors and all the features an average laptop user might need.
The screen has either 1366-by-768- or 1,920-by-1080-pixel resolution. IPS wide viewing angle technology is missing, but touchscreen is available as an option. Computing is done on the Intel Core i3-5005U, i5-5200U, or i7-5500U dual-core CPUs. All of them perform excellent when it comes to the daily home and office chores. The i5 and especially i7 are recommended if you plan to do some heavier stuff like photography and video editing. The chips all feature the Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics, which can serve for casual gaming. Optionally, you can choose the Nvidia GeForce 920M 2GB dedicated video card, with a better gaming potential but it still belongs to the entry-level GPU category. Multitasking is supported by 4, 6, or 8GB of system memory, depending on configuration. The Dell 5558 / i5558 has two memory slots, so you can upgrade RAM to up to 16GB. As for storage, there are two choices: a 500GB or 1-Terabyte hard drive at 5,400rpm. As same as RAM, you can replace the HDD yourself or upgrade it to a solid state drive. RAM, HDD and wireless card upgrades are made easy thanks to the easily removable bottom cover of the notebook’s base. The battery is user-removable, too.

Dell optionally offers backlight for the keyboard, which has isle-style keys, a dedicated numeric pad, an spill-resistant design. The trackpad has click buttons integrated in it. The keyboard deck is made of black plastics, while the lid is made of brushed aluminum. The lid is available in black, silver, or white color.
The well-rounded feature set includes a DVD burner, stereo speakers, a 720p web camera, 802.11AC wireless connection, Ethernet LAN network port, Bluetooth, two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 port, HDMI video jack, Intel Wireless Display technology, and a media card reader.

According to Dell, the battery life on the 5558 can last up to four hours.
The laptop weighs in at 5.3 pounds with and 4.9 pounds without touchscreen. The casing is 0.9″ thick.

The i5558 is perfect for a college student like myself. So far it has been a worthwhile investment.

Run. The mouse ticks me off. If does what you don’t want and won’t do what you want it to do. It sucks.

The intel corei5, 8gbram, 1 terabyte version, does it have its nvidia 920 2gb as total dedicated graphics or as shared memory graphics?

Danijel Z –
It depends. Most configurations include only the Intel HD shared graphics. If a config has the Nvidia card, it should be clearly visible in the specs sheet of a particular model.

can we replace 5558 laptop non backlit keyboard with baclit keyboard?

Keyboard with backlight exists as a replacement part for the Dell 5558, but you have to be sure your laptop unit has a keyboard backlight connector inside. Like on this image (the smaller connector): http://laptoping.com/specs/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Dell-Inspiron-5558-i5558-keyboard-backlight-connector.jpg
If you’re careful enough, you can check yourself whether your unit has the connector by following instructions from this manual (page 37): http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-15-5558-laptop_Service%20Manual_en-us.pdf

Do all 5558 have two ram slots? I bought one with 4 gb. Says 4gbx1, can i upgrade to 8 gb with another 4 gb ram or will i have to replace with 8gb ram???

The Dell 5558 has two RAM slots, according to official docs. 4 x 1 probably means that one slot is occupied with a 4GB module, therefore you have a free slot to insert another 4GB module.

The laptop uses DDR3L 1600MHz RAM. It has two RAM slots, so it supports up to 16GB (2x8GB). If you already own the laptop, you can download CPU-Z and see RAM info under Memory tab of the program.

It’s an 0.9MP camera, which can capture 1280 x 720 (HD) videos at 30 fps. Overall, an average notebook camera.

NotebookCheck has pretty much accurate display measurements and according to them the brightness is really low at slightly below 200 cd/m². http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-Inspiron-15-5558-Notebook-Review.145836.0.html
However, I use on daily basis an HP Pavilion x360 11 with even lower brightness of around 170 cd/m² and its quite usable in usual environments, such as indoors during day and night. It’s only problematic if you use it outdoors.
