HP 2000-2d09WM $178 Black Friday 2013 Laptop (Specs Review)

The HP 2000-2d09WM (Black Licorice) 15.6-inch laptop model will be on sale this Black Friday at Walmart for only $178 and we can say right away that it will be one of the cheapest Black Friday laptop offers. The caveat here is low performance of the system. The 2000-2d09WM sports the AMD E-300 dual-core 1.3GHz processor, which is on the bottom of the laptop CPU list when you order them by speed. You’ll notice sluggish operation even in the easiest tasks, such as web surfing or office document editing. But, with some patience involved, you’ll get the job done and additionally you’ll be able to play full HD videos on the laptop. Heavy multitasking and gaming won’t work well at all on this system. It’s good to see that RAM and hard drive capacities haven’t been crippled in order to lower the price of the system. You get 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD, just like on the majority of consumer laptops in today’s market.

HP 2000-2d09WM

HP’s 2000-2d09WM is a somewhat clunky system with a bland design. It’s 1.4-inch thick and weighs 5.4 pounds. The components are encased in glossy black plastics and the only visible decoration is watermark-like logo on the palmrest and the lid. In the middle of the interior sit a full-size keyboard, with no backlight nor numeric pad, as well as a nicely sized trackpad with physically isolated click buttons.

In terms of other important features, the 2000-2d09WM doesn’t lag much behind the competition. Normally, you get 1,366×768 display resolution, a built-in DVD burner optical drive, stereo speakers, webcam with mic, Wi-Fi wireless and Ethernet LAN wired Internet connections, three USB ports, HDMI video output (missing on some other lowest end notebooks), VGA video out, and a multi-in-one media card reader. What you don’t get is USB 3.0 speed on any of the present ports, so you’ll have to stick with slower 2.0 data transfer speed.

Although it doesn’t have a powerful power-hungry processor, the notebook doesn’t shine when it comes to battery life. HP estimates it’ll last of up to 3.75 hours.

Overall, the 2000-2d09WM isn’t a great laptop by no means, but it will be one rare notebooks under $200 this Black Friday. And below that price point, we can’t complain about weak performance nor uninspiring design.

Update: Best Buy will have a laptop with a better CPU for the same price, but with a smaller 320GB HDD. It’s the Dell Inspiron I15RV-1952BLK.

You can find the official product page of the HP on Walmart.com.

  3. Thank you for the info. I am lucky and I scored both of these laptops (Best Buy Dell and Walmart HP)! But I am in Hawaii and Best Buy raised the price to almost $200; Walmart kept its price if 188. Does your recommendation for the Dell change now that it is about $20 more. I will use this computer for word, emails and internet search and to upload photos ( nothing professional just to snapfish and Facebook, but maybe some cropping).

  4. Hi could you tell me what would be a better computer from this one or the other one that walmart had for $278 Hp Pavilion touchsmart 14-b109wm sleekbook. If they were the SAME price which one would you get if touch didn’t matter to you? I know the touch one is only a 14in and the other one is 15.6in which to me is a big deal but the touch feature doesnt mean anything to me. What is the better computer? Thanks!

    • If I have to choose between the 14-b109wm and 2000-2d09wm, regardless of touchscreen capability, my choice is the 14-b109wm because:

      – It has a faster processor. Both are sluggish for today’s standards but the Celeron inside 14-b109wm is still way faster than the AMD E-300 inside the HP 2000. The E-300 is very likely the slowest laptop processor on the market today.

      – It’s thinner and lighter: 0.8″ versus 1.3″ and 4.4 lbs versus 5.4 lbs.
      – Since the screen resolution is the same on both displays, there’s no big difference between the two displays in terms of usability although the 2000 has a slightly bigger one.

  7. I want to be able to stream movies on a cheap laptop, and I’d love the VGA port for my old projector. Would this laptop be laggy in the video streaming department vs the Dell at Best Buy?

    • You can download it for free on any Windows 8 & 7 laptop. But, keep in mind that editing of high-resolution videos on this laptop will be very sluggish.

  8. I currently have a HP Pavilion G6 and I’m thinking about buying this model from Walmart this week, but I’m not sure. Do you happen to know how they compare? Would it be an upgrade or a downgrade from what I currently have? Any info would be great! Thanks!

      • I don’t know that info off the top of my head, but is it anywhere printed on the computer itself?

        • I don’t know if there are specs listed on the body, but you can get that info from Windows. If you run WIndows 7 (I assume) you should Click Start button, then click Control Panel icon, System and Maintenance, and then System.

There you’ll have processor name and amount of system memory listed.

    • The dual-core AMD E-300 inside the 2000-2d09wm is one of the slowest processors on the market today, but it’s better than your old single-core Atom N455. For comparison the E-300 has 631 points in passmark.com processor benchmark, while the N455 scores only 286, so it’s very likely that you’ll notice some speed up if you get the HP laptop. Also, the E-300 gives you possibility to play 1080p videos on the laptop, whereas on the N455 1080p looks like a slideshow.

  9. Hi! I am currently using a HP Netbook and it is on its last leg! This thing is VERY SLOW!!! I am hoping the Walmart deal has to be at least one step up. I will only need it for iTunes (downloading and importing). I use my iPad for everything else which is why I do not want to spend a lot of money. I have spent hours on the phone with tech support and the damn thing still does not work properly! I know I will probably not be able to get one but just in case. Thanks!

    • Can you tell me what CPU is inside your netbook? Intel Atom N450, N270, some other maybe? Maybe an AMD chip?

  10. I’m looking for a cheap laptop for my 13 year old son to play minecraft on would the one at Wal-mart work for that? He really wouldn’t use it for much more then that at this age…..maybe later on down the road we will buy him one that will work better for other stuff

    • Your son will be able to play it on HP’s 2000-2d09WM but it will run smooth only on lower settings, like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB62gsjslxA . I’ve already said Best Buy’s Dell Inspiron I15RV-1952BLK laptop with the same price on Black Friday is better for everyday computing, but for Minecraft I think both laptops are equal in terms of performance.

    • If a 500GB HDD is a must, you can go for the HP, but performance is definitely on Dell’s side. The Celeron inside the Dell isn’t a good performer for today’s standards and the AMD E300 in the HP is even noticeably worse than it.
