Asus A55VD-NB51

The Asus A55VD-NB51 is the latest 15.6″ notebook with a 3rd Generation Intel Core i5 processor and an Nvidia dedicated video card.

The notebook incorporates the i5-3210M “Ivy Brigde” dual-core chip with a base clock speed of 2.5GHz and up to 3.1GHz in TurboBoost mode, while the GeForce GT 610M provides 2GB of video memory. System memory of 6GB and hard disk with 750GB capacity are bigger than on the most of the available notebooks on the market.

Relevant CPU Benchmarks – PassMark

Intel Core i3-3120M at 2.50GHz – 3,657 points
Intel Core i5-2450M (2nd Gen) at 2.50GHz – 3,563
Intel Core i5-3210M at 2.50GHz – 3,930
Intel Core i7-3610QM at 2.30GHz – 7,679

The comparison of PassMark benchmark results above shows that the i5 in the A55VD-NB51 is faster than the comparable 3rd Gen i3, but not significantly. As expected, the CPU is faster than the previous generation counterpart, but much slower than the entry quad-core Ivy Bridge chip.

The included GeForce 610M video card is the slowest one in the whole GeForce 600 series, but at least it has its own video memory and doesn’t burden laptop’s RAM like the Intel HD 4000 integrated GPU does.

When it comes to design of the A55VD-NB51, there are a couple of good selling points on its side. First, the palmrest is made of brushed aluminum instead of plastics, giving it a stylish appearance of the interior. Also, the laptop has a chiclet keyboard, as well as Ice Cool technology, meaning that the hot core components are located far away from users hands while typing. The lid is made of textured plastics. The whole laptop weighs 5.8 pounds, which is a little on the heavy side for its category, but its 1.3-inch profile is fairly thin.

Regardless of having decent and brand new components, the A55 is still an affordable laptop, with a current price of around $670 at Newegg.

    • This notebook isn’t suitable for GTA 5. I haven’t tested GTA 5 on it, but its graphics processor GeForce 610 is very weak. Even if the laptop manages to start the game, frame rates will be very low and probably unplayable.
