HP Pavilion 17-g119dx 17.3″ Laptop with Intel Core i5, 4GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive (Silver)
Besides a big 17.3-inch display, the HP Pavilion 17-g119dx laptop offers good computing performance and a plenty of data storage space at a low price. As opposed to Full HD 1920×1080 laptops, the 17-g119dx sports lower 1600×900-pixel display resolution, which is a standard one for inexpensive 17.3-inchers.
Under the hood, this 6.2-pound desktop replacement notebook with 1.1″ thin profile and silver-colored plastic chassis packs the old 4th Generation Intel Core i5-4210U dual-core processor with Intel HD 4400 integrated graphics, 4GB of system memory, and a 1-Terabyte hard drive. The 4th Gen i5 chip isn’t as power efficient as newer 5th or 6th Gen counterparts and its graphics is also somewhat slower. But, overall computing performance doesn’t lag a lot behind the newer versions of the chip. The i5-4210U can handle the daily tasks effortlessly. It can also serve for more demanding tasks like media production, but these remain the domain of much faster quad-core i7 CPUs. Besides spacious but slow 1TB HDD at 5,400 rpm, another potential performance bottleneck of the system is its 4GB RAM size. It’s quite enough if you don’t run many programs and browser tabs at the same time, but any heavier multitasking will slow down the system. Unfortunately, upgrading RAM of HP’s 17-g119dx isn’t an easy task, since the memory slots aren’t easily accessible due to a lack of a removable dedicated upgrade cover on the bottom of the chassis.
In other aspects, the laptop is very well equipped. It has a spacious keyboard with numeric pad but no backlight, a multi-touch trackpad with integrated buttons for click actions, stereo speakers enhanced by Bang & Olufsen, a 720p web camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Ethernet LAN, HDMI video out, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port, a media card reader, and a combo audio jack.
The battery has a medium-class capacity of 41 WHr. Given the big screen requires a lot of power, you can expect a great battery life on this model. It will probably last around 4 hours on a single charge.
The laptop runs the latest Windows 10 OS version.
At the time of this writing, the HP Pavilion 17-g119dx costs $499.99, but it will be offered with a $100 discount during Black Friday 2015 sales at Best Buy.

It’s a good budget-class laptop with solid performance for $399. What I don’t like is that RAM size of 4GB isn’t great and you can’t upgrade it easily. But, if you’re an average user who doesn’t run too many programs simultaneously, even 4GB will be fine. Of course, having a sharper Full HD screen and IPS technology for wide viewing angles would be a great thing, but these features are reserved for much pricier models. Overall, for $399, the 17-g119dx probably offers the best value when it comes to the big-screen 17.3″ notebooks.

What do you think is better, this laptop or the Toshiba satellite c55-c5380? I did not care too much about how big the screen is n the Toshiba has double the ram. Thank you for your advice in advance.

If you plan to run many programs simultaneously or do web browsing with lots of tabs opened, Toshiba is a safer choice. You can read this article about typical RAM use by different programs:

Additional problem with the HP 17-g119dx is that its RAM is really hard to upgrade and may void your warranty. Also, the HP will probably have a shorter battery life than the Toshiba, since it has a smaller 41WHr battery versus 45WHr, while having a more power-hungry display.
On the positive side, the HP has not only bigger screen, but also better 1600×900 resolution – an important improvement if you watch movies or run programs side-by-side.
