Dell Inspiron 15 i5548-1670SLV (Signature Edition) Laptop
The Dell Inspiron 15 i5548-1670SLV Signature Edition Laptop is a classic 15.6-inch notebook with touchscreen support, great performance, a plenty of storage space, aluminum lid, and affordable price.
Hardware specs-wise, the heart of the Dell Inspiron 15 i5548-1670SLV is the latest mid-range Intel Core i5-5200U processor we reviewed recently. In short, the i5-5200U with its Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics crunches daily web, office, casual gaming, and multimedia duties with ease, and provides extra potential for heavier stuff like video and photo editing. Notebook’s large system memory size of 8GB is more than enough for day-to-day multitasking. Its big 1-Terabyte hard drive delivers twice the storage capacity of an average 500GB HDD. Nevertheless, the 1TB HDD spinning at 5,400rpm is a slow one, but you have an option to upgrade it to a solid state drive yourself if you want top performance. Dell has made replacements of RAM and storage easy, via the bottom of the chassis. This model has 1366-by-768-pixel display resolution, as opposed to some other configurations of the Inspiron 15 5548 series with 1920×1080 Full HD screens. Not all displays in the 5548 series support 10-point multi-touch input. Thankfully, the 1670SLV does. On the negative side, IPS technology for wide viewing angles is missing on all models.
The touch display is accompanied by a roomy backlit spill-resistant keyboard with Chiclet-style keys and numeric pad and a spacious trackpad with integrated click buttons. The keyboard is surrounded by black plastics, as opposed to silver-ish aluminum on the back of the display.
Other highlights are stereo speakers, a 2-megapixel webcam, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 ports, HDMI video connector, multiformat media card reader, Wi-Fi AC and Ethernet LAN network connections, Wi-Di wireless display technology, and Bluetooth.
The battery inside the i5548-1670SLV has 3 cells and 43.50 WHr capacity, as opposed to more capacious 4‑cell 58 WHr units fond in select 5548 configurations. On the positive side, the 1670SLV is a bit lighter because of it and weighs in at 5.3 pounds. Overall thickness of the chassis when the laptop is closed is 0.9″, so it is pretty much thin for a full-size notebook.
Overall, if you manage to grab a Dell Inspiron 15 i5548-1670SLV Signature Edition Laptop on discount at Microsoft Store for $449 after huge $250 instant savings, you’ll have probably the best priced notebook on the market, considering the given specifications and features.

No, it doesn’t unfortunately. It only has a single 2.5″ storage bay.

I have this laptop for 2 yrs now. Its design is faulty which causes the hinges to crank and crack. I have spent a lot on repairing hinges already. During the earlier hinge break the WiFi had gone bad and now I am dependent on USB based WiFi receiver which needs to be reinserted at times. Also, the battery could not be taken out easily and the right click also has gone bad. The model plastic is low in quality. Recently there was a short circuit issue in the motherboard and I was lucky to find a repair guy who changed the affected MOSFET.
On the processing side, the laptop becomes quite slow at times and I am contemplating to increase the RAM from 8GB to 16 GB as I have to work on a virtual machine which itself requires 8 GB to work effectively. My only contention is whether this laptop can support 16GB of RAM. Please let me know as soon as possible as my career depends on it.

Thank you for your reviews!!
I have a major question that I’ve been having a lot of difficulty with finding the answers to when researching laptops.
Does this Dell Inspiron 15 i5548-1670SLV laptop have an easy “user” replaceable battery?
Another question I have is:
How many hours will this battery last? It’s for a college student.
Thank you very much for your time and assistance!

The battery can be replaced, but the process isn’t as easy as on laptops with traditional-style batteries that can pop-up from the bottom of the chassis by releasing the battery latches. Instead, on this laptop you’ll have to remove the bottom panel of the casing, which is held by a couple of screws, and then remove a couple of screws on the battery itself.
I haven’t tested the battery life on this particular model, but judging from the specs you’ll be probably able to get around five hours of web surfing via Wi-Fi and somewhat decreased screen brightness (let’s say 75 percent).

Thanks for the answers!
Do you know which vendors actually sell this type of battery for this particular laptop? Or would I have to go through dell.com?
Danijel Z –
I think it’s the best way to get a battery from Dell.com, since its for sure an original one. They have two variants available for the i5548:
58WHr: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=451-BBLY&mfgpid=240418
43WHr: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=451-BBLO&mfgpid=240418
The first one is a better choice, since it has a noticeably better capacity, while costing only $10 more.
If you want to find compatible batteries via other sellers, its worth noting that batteries for the Inspiron 5000 5542, Insporion 15R 5545, and Inspiron 5448 are compatible with the 5548 series and the i5548-1670SLV itself.

Thanks!
I have one more question.
Noticed that this laptop is a Signature Edition which I think means that the only security protection is Windows Defender. After doing some research, this security is not the best. However, I’ve seen conflicting reports on which is the best “total” anti-virus/internet protection software…with emphasis on malware-identity theft. (Using real-time monitoring.) Do you have any recommendations on a “total” security software? If not, then do you know which security website is the most reliable to look at reviews….tests performed? What do you think about Kaspersky?
Thanks for any info you can provide!
Danijel Z –
Here’s a great comparison of security software for home users: http://dennistechnologylabs.com/reports/s/a-m/2015/DTL_2015_Q1_Home.1.1.pdf
Kaspersky is the winner with their Internet Security 2015 program.

hi i have a Question
so i have a ‘dell inspiron n5110’ i’ve had it for 5years now… i’ve been SO SO SO unhappy with it for the past 3 or 2.5 years… it brought me to a point that i was like “I WILL NEVER BUY A DELL LAPTOP EVER AGAIN” but Dell has the best laptops that have fair Price tags… now i’m looking for a solid mid-range laptop and this one looks good to me should i go for it? if not what laptop do you suggest ? is it a good upgrade to my shitty ‘inspiron n5110’ ?
what is the reason for me yo be unhappy with this shitty dell inspiron n5110?? faulty cooler/fan, overheating problems, faulty drivers, blue screens, it even lags when i watch youtube videos, expensive repair costs and etc.

I don’t know what processor and how much RAM you have in your laptop, but the i5548-1670SLV with the Core i5-5200U CPU and 8GB of RAM is an excellent choice, especially with the discounted price of $450.
Your notebook probably has one of the 2nd Gen Intel Core processors, while the i5-5200U is 5th Gen part, with much lower power consumption and cooler operation.
Check out this review to see how the i5-5200U performs in everyday computing tasks:
http://laptoping.com/cpus/product/intel-core-i5-5200u/
Video playback on the Intel HD 5500 integrated graphics runs flawlessly, including 1080p and even 4K. You can also play some games on it. More about it here:

If you however have more money to spend, you should check out some of the notebooks with IPS display technology for wider viewing angles and 1080p resolution for sharper picture:
